After being on sale in the International market since 2015, Volkswagen India has finally introduced the new-generation Passat in the country. Contrary to earlier speculations, Volkswagen introduced the Passat in a standard powertrain instead of the hybrid GTE. The flagship sedan is currently available in two trims – Comfortline and Highline with six colour options and a single powertrain.
The Passat is in its eight generation worldwide, but the Indian market has just received its third generation vehicle. The sedan is based on the MQB platform and is built at Volkswagen's Aurangabad facility in Maharashtra. It becomes the second Volkswagen in India to be based on the new versatile MQB platform after the recently launched Tiguan SUV. The newer platform sheds off 70kg of weight compared to the outgoing model.
The styling of the new Passat is understated yet graceful. It carries the German carmaker’s new family design. The louvered grille is similar to the Tiguan, flanked by LED day-time-running-lights. The rear tail lights too carry a subtle styling which is akin to the outgoing model.
Similar to the exterior, the Passat has a simple and functional cabin layout on the inside. Being a flagship offering, the Passat comes with all the bells and whistles the German giant has on offer. So you get leather upholstery, three-zone climate control, electric seats, ambient lighting, and smartphone integration as standard. The sedan also comes with park assist and driving modes along with a host of passive safety features as standard.
Engine and transmission
Powering the D-segment sedan is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine. The TDI produces 177bhp between 3,600rpm and 350Nm from as low as 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. Transmission is a six-speed DSG powering the front wheels. A 1.4-litre TSI is expected to be offered as well, but that will be introduced later.
Competition and pricing
Volkswagen’s D-segment offering will come as a direct rival to the likes of Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and its sibling, the Skoda Superb. The new Passat retails at an introductory price of Rs 29.99 lakhs for the Comfortline and Rs 32.99 lakhs for the Highline (ex-showroom Mumbai).
