Volvo has introduced plug-in hybrid versions of the XC60 and XC90 globally. With plug-in hybrids only now beginning to find their way into the Indian market, these models could make an interesting case for Volvo if introduced here.
Speaking of which, Volvo has introduced these new variants for European and American markets, but their combination of petrol power and extended electric capability could make them solid additions to Volvo’s portfolio in India as the country’s premium plug-in hybrid market begins to take shape.
The new XC60 can travel up to 124 miles (approximately 200km) on electric power alone, while the larger XC90 offers an electric range of up to 99 miles (approximately 159km). Volvo says this represents more than two-and-a-half times the electric range of its existing plug-in hybrid variants.
The increased range comes from a larger floor-integrated battery and a more powerful electric motor, while the petrol engine can take over when required. Both SUVs will also continue to be offered with mild-hybrid powertrains.
For the Indian market, that combination could be particularly appealing. Charging infrastructure is expanding rapidly, but long-distance travel still presents challenges for EV owners in several parts of the country. A plug-in hybrid can potentially offer the best of both worlds; electric driving for urban commuting and a conventional engine for longer journeys.
Unfortunately, there is no announcement of an Indian launch for either of these long-range plug-in hybrid variants. Volvo has currently confirmed them for European and American markets, with order books opening in selected markets from September 15, 2026, and production scheduled to begin later this year.
