Volvo S60 Cross Country launched at Rs 38.9 lakh

Volvo Cars India has created a new niche with its entry-level sedan, the S60. It has given it higher ground clearance, some body cladding, and a new name – the S60 Cross Country. And it has launched with a price tag of Rs 38.9 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai).

Now doing ‘cross’ versions of existing models isn’t a new phenomenon. We have seen it across price points in hatchbacks – including Volvo’s own V40, and internationally, carmakers have given station wagons and MPVs similar treatment as well. But, to give a sedan SUV overtones is a new thing and if the S60 Cross Country catches on, maybe lesser priced sedans might head the same way in India.

The Volvo S60 Cross Country only comes with one engine option – a 2.4-litre, five-cylinder diesel that makes 190bhp and 420Nm. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic. But, here’s where things begin to get interesting. The S60 Cross Country comes with all-wheel drive as standard and has a ground clearance of over 200mm, now that’s as much as most SUVs. Clearly, the S60 Cross Country is no poser; it means business.

Like all Volvos, this one is also loaded with safety features. It gets 2-step airbags, city safety up to 50kmph and whiplash protection. Despite the basic sedan form, with its off-roading features it competes with the BMW X1 and the Audi A3. Volvo is offering the car in only trim, imported to India as a CBU unit.
