- Free software upgrade for models produced since 2020
- New UX reduces taps and enhances infotainment usability
Volvo Cars has announced one of its largest over-the-air software updates to date, introducing a new infotainment interface called Volvo Car UX. The update will be deployed to around 2.5 million cars across 85 countries, including models built as early as 2020 equipped with Google built in.
The new system is based on Android Automotive OS and is designed to make the central touchscreen more intuitive and easier to operate. Volvo says the refreshed layout reduces the number of taps required to access frequently used features such as navigation, media, and phone functions. These apps now appear directly on the home screen, allowing drivers to switch tasks without exiting applications like Google Maps.

A new contextual bar dynamically displays recently used apps and relevant shortcuts depending on driving conditions. For instance, the exterior camera icon appears at low speeds to assist with manoeuvring. Plug-in hybrid models also benefit from simplified access to drive modes, with Pure electric mode now available directly from the home screen.
Volvo states that the update creates a consistent user experience across its range, meaning older models such as the XC40 will now share a similar interface philosophy with newer vehicles like the EX90. The software also prepares compatible cars for Google Gemini-based conversational AI, expected to roll out later this year.
The update will be delivered free of charge to eligible vehicles as part of Volvo’s ongoing strategy to improve cars over time through regular software enhancements.
