Toyota patents technology that displays autonomous vehicle’s decision process

Toyota has applied for a new patent that uses an augmented reality head-up display to inform passengers about what the self-driving system is carrying out. This includes Information like lane changes, turns, acceleration, and steady running. Graphics have been included to further illustrate how these actions are to be carried out.

Furthermore, the system would also display other important data from the navigation or connected car services like the prescribed speed limit for the road used. It is believed that the head-up display is the safest bet as of now since the driver need not look away from the road to check on the status of the autonomous system. 

In fact, the autonomous driving system could even demonstrate to the driver about the safety that comes with using the self-driving mode at any given point. At a time when there is widespread concern regarding the handing over of all the controls to an autonomous vehicle, Toyota believes that the technology should be showcased as convenient, safe and comforting.
