Tesla model 3 customers might not get the benefit of free recharge at the company’s supercharger stations. At the recently held 2016 annual shareholder meeting, Elon Musk, CEO Tesla Motors, said in regards to the upcoming Tesla Model 3, that it will be difficult to provide subsidised charging options for a car which is anticipating high volume sales. Until now, Tesla customers could charge their electric cars free of cost.
Speaking about it, Musk said, “Superchargers are set up, at least today, for people who bought the car, as free long distance for life. Obviously that has, fundamentally, a cost. The obvious thing to do is to decouple that from the cost of the Model 3. So it will still be very cheap and far cheaper than gasoline to drive long distance with the Model 3, but it will not be free long distance unless you purchase that package.”
The upcoming Tesla Model 3 will be offered in single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations, thereby allowing it to clock 0 to 97kmph in just under six-seconds. On a full charge, the car is capable of covering a distance of 346kms. Currently, Tesla has 632 charging stations with 3,780 Superchargers globally. For now, the company has not revealed the cost of the charging package.
