Sport variant of the 2018 Hyundai Veloster spotted testing

The Veloster will not only receive a generation upgrade, but Hyundai also plans to add a sporty variant of their sports coupe. Recent spy shots reveal that the ‘N’-variant of the Veloster is in works, which will sit above the turbo model of the standard Veloster. ‘N’ is Hyundai's new in-house tuner and the ‘N’ badge is worn by Hyundai’s high performance cars.

The spied vehicle is heavily camouflaged although we have pieced together some information based on the little bits and pieces that were revealed. The side profile reveals a sporty set of alloys with low profile tyres. Behind the alloys are the beefier brake callipers and evidently larger rotors than the standard Veloster which was spotted not so long ago. The styling cues are similar to the standard variant although the camouflage hides a large sporty wing underneath. The exhaust tips of the ‘N’-variant are larger and are mounted on either sides of the diffuser than the centre mounted one on the standard variant.

The vehicle is expected to receive a reworked engine and a retuned underpinning. The spied vehicle apparently rides low and could be expected to debut with stiffer suspension setup. Powering the Veloster-N could be the newly developed 2.0-litre, in-line, four turbocharged petrol engine churning over 275bhp.

An all-wheel-drive powertrain would be an interesting addition to the Veloster-N in order to take on the Ford Focus RS and the Volkswagen Golf-R. The Veloster-N could be the South Korean manufacturer’s attempt to claim the title of the ‘fastest front wheel drive car around Nürburgring’ and to shatter the records set by the Honda Civic Type-R.
