Mahindra is preparing to expand its BE electric SUV range with the BE 07, which is expected to sit above the BE 6. Based on the concept and production-spec test mule, the upcoming SUV will retain the futuristic BE design language while adopting a more practical body style.
Mahindra has traditionally used its Independence Day event to showcase new products and technologies, and the BE 07 is expected to make its debut around this year’s event. An official timeline, however, is yet to be announced.
BE 6 DNA, but more practical
The BE 07 shares its basic design philosophy and electric platform with the BE 6, but its proportions are noticeably more conventional. The longer, more upright body is expected to free up additional cabin space, particularly for rear passengers.
This should make the BE 07 better suited to family use, with improved rear-seat comfort, easier ingress and egress, and better overall ergonomics. In essence, the BE 07 appears to follow a simple philosophy: function over form, without losing the character of the BE range.
Concept-inspired exterior
The production-spec test mule suggests that the BE 07 will stay fairly close to the concept. It gets a wide front end with slim LED lighting, a closed-off fascia, chunky wheel arches and a distinctive rear lighting signature.
The production version is also expected to feature flush-fitting door handles, while some of the concept’s more dramatic elements will be simplified for production. Compared to the BE 6, the overall silhouette is more upright and substantial. This not only gives it a different road presence but should also help Mahindra extract more usable space from the cabin.
Familiar technology inside
The cabin is expected to borrow heavily from the BE 6 in terms of technology and equipment. This should include large digital displays, connected features, advanced safety systems and ADAS.
The key difference will be the packaging. The BE 07 is expected to offer a more spacious and comfortable rear row, making it the more practical option for buyers who regularly carry passengers. Better ergonomics should also make the cabin more user-friendly for everyday use, without moving away from the technology-heavy approach seen in the BE 6.
Same powertrains, strong performance
The BE 07 is expected to use the same electric powertrain family as the BE 6, with similar battery and motor options. Performance should remain a strong point, although the BE 07’s larger size and higher weight could result in slightly different efficiency and range figures.
A more niche BE 6?
The arrival of the BE 07 could make the BE 6 even more niche in terms of its customer base. Buyers specifically drawn to its quirky design, sporty character and the fun factor of owning something different will still have a reason to choose it, while those looking for greater practicality could naturally gravitate towards the BE 07.
This positioning could work particularly well for Mahindra. Even among the original eSUVs, the XEV 9e has managed to generate stronger sales volumes than the BE 6, suggesting that buyers are willing to prioritise a more conventional and practical package.
The BE 07 could therefore sit neatly between the two. It could combine the sportiness and technology of the BE 6 with the space and practicality of the XEV 9e, potentially offering the best of both worlds.
