Next-gen Toyota Avalon continues testing ahead of Detroit debut

The Avalon is Toyota’s full-size sedan for the US market. The sedan is set to enter into its fifth generation which will be revealed at the Detroit Motor Show early next year. A test mule of the new-gen Avalon was caught testing near Ann Arbor in Michigan, USA.

The new generation Avalon will move to the Japanese carmaker’s new modular platform which currently underpins the Camry. Under the heavy camouflage, the sedan retains its basic dimension and shape. It is expected to retain the sedan’s styling cues with stylish headlamps, modern grille and sharper lines while maintaining the Avalon’s conservative styling.

The test mule also sports dual exhaust tips at the back and the cladding fails to hide the petite trunk spoiler on the deck. The prototype is seen running the same set of wheels which is used for the current generation car. Switching to the flexible modular TNGA platform would help the new generation with better packaging thus improving the cabin space. The interior is expected to be revamped as well.

Under the hood will be the same line-up of engines ranging from four-cylinder to a V6 including a hybrid powertrain. However, the small-displacement turbocharged motor is ruled out for the new Avalon, according to reports.

The production of the new-gen Avalon is expected to commence late next year, following the reveal at Detroit. The sedan will roll out as a 2019MY to continue its fray against the likes of the Buick Lacrosse, Nissan Maxima and the Chrysler 300 in the American market.
