New-gen Mahindra Thar spied testing in production guise; Interiors revealed

- The new Mahindra Thar will be broader and longer in dimensions.

- It is likely to get a new chassis that will meet the new safety guidelines.

- Expected to house a new 2.0-litre BS-VI compliant diesel motor and a 6-speed gearbox.

The next-generation Mahindra Thar was spied testing in production-spec form earlier this week. The new Thar will feature a longer and wider body compared to the outgoing model, as is apparent from the spy shots. The new set of images also reveal the all-new interiors of the off-road SUV.

The Thar will feature modern interiors with an all-new dashboard, while the multi-functional steering wheel has been borrowed from the TUV300. The SUV will receive a twin-pod instrument cluster with a large MID, while the air-con control switches and the seats are all-new as well. That spy shot shows that the car will come with a provision for an audio system, and we can expect higher variants to get a touchscreen unit.

The new Mahindra Thar retains the Jeep CJ-5-inspired design with a wider seven-slot grille and a more prominent front bumper. The SUV is expected to be underpinned by a new chassis that will help the car meet upcoming safety regulations. The Thar will also receive standard safety features like dual airbags, ABS with EBD, parking sensors, speed alert system and seat belt reminder.

As far as mechanicals are concerned, the new-generation Mahindra Thar is expected to house a new 2.0-litre BS-VI compliant diesel motor that will replace the existing powertrains. The engine will be mated to a low-range six-speed gearbox along with a four-wheel drivetrain. It is also likely to get a mechanical locking differential at the rear.
