The current-gen Hyundai i20 is a sub-4m hatchback. But the facelift, which was spied, and has now been launched in Brazil, spans 4.1m long. When we speculated that the i20 would grow dimensionally, it actually did. The new version now ranges between BRL 99,990-1,39,990 (Brazilian Real), which in our currency, roughly equals to INR 18.8-26.3 lakh. This i20 has moved to Hyundai’s K3 platform, the same one that underpins the current-gen Kia Seltos, which proved its rigidity in BNCAP crash tests.
We have had exclusive glimpses of the new i20 prior to its unveil, and nothing is unchanged from the leak. Connected front and rear light bars, dual-tone alloys, 12.3-inch curved dual-screen setup, logoless steering, i20 seat motifs, wireless charging pad, and dual-tone leather upholstery are a standard affair. What's new, is the inclusion of an ADAS suite. Bootspace stands at 346 litres.
Mechanically, the new Hyundai i20 gets two engine options: 1.0-litre MPi Flex Fuel(NA) and 1.0-litre TGDi (turbo) Flex Fuel, which churn out 79bhp/100Nm and 113.4bhp/171.5Nm, irrespective of the use of E30 petrol or ethanol.
Expectations for India
The new i20 is also likely to come to India, but with corner-cutting measures like a sub-4m length, lower bootspace, and the omission of an ADAS suite. The NA version uses a 1.2-litre unit, with the 1.0-litre turbo reserved for the N Line. Therefore, mechanicals are highly likely to stay the same.
Since E85 has officially been rolled out, the new i20 should also be FFV-ready. A sub-INR 10 lakh price would be the sweet spot for a hatchback, otherwise it will be deep in the compact SUV territory in India.
