Toyota has globally unveiled the all-new ninth-generation Hilux, and for the first time, the legendary off-roader will be offered in an all-electric version. The carmaker showcased two iterations of the pickup — a fully electric BEV and a plug-in diesel hybrid — with production set to begin in December 2025.
The Hilux BEV retains its signature body-on-frame construction while maintaining its proven off-road capabilities. It features a Multi-Terrain Select system that adjusts the vehicle’s performance across different surfaces using a combination of brake and torque controls, mimicking the drivability of the conventional low-range mode. Powering the Hilux EV is a 59.2kWh battery pack placed under the floor, offering a real-world driving range of around 240km on a single charge.
In terms of performance, the Hilux EV comes equipped with front and rear e-Axles, delivering 205Nm and 268Nm of torque, respectively. The electric truck can carry a payload of 715kg, and has a towing capacity of 1,600kg.
Meanwhile, the plug-in hybrid version combines a 48V system with the tried-and-tested 2.8-litre diesel engine. In this setup, the Hilux can tow up to 3,500kg and carry nearly 1,000kg of payload. It continues to offer impressive off-road credentials, including a 700mm water-wading capacity.
Inside, the cabin receives a major upgrade with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, and a fully digital instrument cluster of the same size. Other key features include a blind spot monitor, driver monitoring system, and wireless charging, among others.
With these updates, the new Hilux aims to blend ruggedness with modern-day electrification and tech, reaffirming its reputation as one of the most capable and versatile pickups on the planet.
