MG Motor’s first product to be a Compass/Tucson rival, will arrive in the first half of 2019

-    Will be produced at the Halol plant which will start production in Q1 of 2019.

-    The second vehicle will be a pure EV which too will be locally produced.

-    Is expected to be priced under Rs 20 lakhs to keep it competitive.

MG Motor, the legendary British automaker, which is now owned by Chinese manufacturer SAIC has officially announced its India plans. MG Motor India will introduce their first product in the country next year, which will be an SUV that will rival the likes of Hyundai Tucson and Jeep Compass. 

The first yet to be named SUV will be locally produced at the Halol plant which was earlier owned by GM Motors. The powertrain of the SUV will be imported from China but MG is looking for 75 per cent localisation, to begin with. The British marque claims that the SUV has been designed and engineered in the UK and China. 

MG might be taking a top-down approach by bringing in the premium vehicles first and then introducing vehicles in the high volume segments. SAIC has partnerships with other carmakers in China and they have hinted that through these partnerships they could also bring others cars to India under the MG brand.

There are no official specifications available at the moment. But given that the SUV will be eyeing the Compass and the Tucson, we expect it to match the two in terms of dimension and equipment list. MG India is expected to price their first SUV in the sub- Rs 20 lakh price point to make it more competitive amongst the well-established rivals.
