- Shift in consumer preferences
- Rising popularity of crossovers
Maruti Suzuki has announced its sales numbers for April 2025, and although overall sales have jumped, things aren’t looking good for the company’s entry-level models. In April, Maruti Suzuki sold 179,791 cars, including domestic sales and exports. For reference, the brand sold 168,089 cars in April 2024.
Compared to 11,519 units of the Alto and the S-Presso sold in April 2024, Maruti Suzuki managed to shift 6,332 units of the said models last month, indicating a significant drop in demand for basic, entry-level cars. The Indian car market is going through a steady shift wherein private car buyers are looking for improved comfort, convenience, and safety, even if it’s on a limited budget. This evolving mindset and approach towards car buying has resulted in a diminishing share of entry-level models across car brands when it comes to sales.
As for the rest of Maruti’s line-up, the combined sales of cars like the Swift, Baleno, Dzire, Ignis, and the Wagon R have increased compared to the same period last year. Similarly, Maruti Suzuki’s SUV and crossover range has also seen a positive shift in sales numbers with more units of the Brezza, Fronx, and the Grand Vitara seeing a higher demand. It’s the company’s entry-level models, namely the Alto and the S-Presso that are struggling to sell at this point.
