The XUV 500 hybrid has a permanent magnet synchronous motor and a lithium ion battery to aid the diesel mill to generate power. The vehicle like most other hybrids gets electric power mated to an engine, however it has a manual transmission and it is a first by any manufacturer worldwide. The electric motor works at low revs and also during acceleration, and re-generates energy during breaking.
Dr Pawan Goenka, executive director and president of automotive and farm equipment sector, said that the XUV500 hybrid falls under ‘Accessible Technology’ and that the company is committed to sustainable mobility solutions, encompassing alternative technologies into the R&D and commercialisation plans.
The SUV was shown with a cut section and transparent acrylic body to present the hybrid technology. This particular vehicle is said to be 18 per cent efficient than the conventional diesel-powered XUV 500.
