- Two airbag version scores two stars for adult and one star for child occupant protection
- Six airbag version improves to three stars for adult and two stars for child occupant protection
The Made-in-India Maruti Suzuki Celerio has been crash tested by Global NCAP, with results highlighting a clear difference in performance between the two airbag and six airbag versions. The assessment applies to the Indian market and forms part of Global NCAP’s latest test cycle before stricter protocols come into effect.
The Celerio, equipped with two airbags, achieved a two-star rating for Adult Occupant Protection and a one-star rating for Child Occupant Protection. In terms of scores, it registered 18.04 out of 34 points for adult protection and 9.52 out of 49 points for child protection. During the frontal offset crash test, protection to the driver’s and passenger’s heads was rated adequate to good, while chest protection for the driver was weak. The bodyshell and footwell area were rated unstable, indicating limited capacity to withstand further loadings.
For child occupants, the performance was limited due to poor protection in frontal impacts and the absence of three-point seatbelts in all seating positions. The inability to disconnect the front passenger airbag when installing a rearward-facing child seat also affected the score, resulting in the one-star child safety rating.

In contrast, the six airbag version of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio performed better, scoring three stars for Adult Occupant Protection and two stars for Child Occupant Protection. It recorded 18.04 out of 34 points for adult protection and 18.57 out of 49 points for child protection. The addition of standard side body and curtain airbags significantly improved protection levels in side impact and side pole tests, with good head protection and improved chest performance.
Despite these gains, the six airbag version showed weaknesses in frontal impact, including weak chest protection for the driver and an unstable bodyshell. Child occupant scores remained constrained due to inadequate protection in frontal impacts for both the 18 month and three-year old child dummies, along with the absence of a passenger airbag cut-off switch.
The safety ratings apply to India-made Celerio models sold in the Indian market, and are valid from the specified VIN range (VIN MA3TFC62SRM323533) for the six airbag version.
