Hyundai India, in its recent investor day presentation, charted out a complete product strategy, encompassing several upcoming nameplates and feature updates. One of the latter is an overhauled infotainment system, which the carmaker says, is the first to debut with an AAOS (Android Automotive Operating System) implementation.
What is AAOS (Android Automotive Operating System)?
Typically, current infotainment systems in India support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, both of which essentially mirror an Android phone/iPhone on a car’s infotainment screen. This requires smartphone connectivity.
However, a screen with AAOS is smartphone-independent, since it runs a proprietary OS that handles basic infotainment duties. With Hyundai, the same AAOS-based system will debut with a Creta-sized compact SUV in Q1 CY 2027. This will essentially integrate the GApps (Google Apps) suite, with support for services like maps, music, etc.
Next-gen Infotainment System: Features
Hyundai’s next gen cluster will consist of a 9.9-inch slim instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch infotainment screen, which is set to debut with an upcoming Creta-sized compact SUV. While higher trims of the existing Creta pack in dual 10.25-inch displays, the IC size is downgraded, and we assume that the central infotainment screen (now upgraded in size), with an AAOS-based implementation, will bake in added functionality.
This infotainment screen will also support map OTAs, giving the navigation service periodic updates. The smartphone-independent OS will also support third-party apps via the in-car app market. The same infotainment system will also make its way to other Hyundai models as part of a phased rollout.
