Hyundai has officially entered the race to develop an affordable and compact EV for the masses. The much-anticipated Ioniq 2 has been spotted undergoing early road tests in Korea, revealing a production-ready body and several design details. Internally codenamed ‘BJ1’, this hatchback-sized EV is expected to hit global markets by 2026 as a direct rival to the Volkswagen ID.2.
The Ioniq 2 will be Hyundai’s most compact EV offering yet, and unlike the crossover-themed designs of its Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 siblings, it embraces the look of a traditional five-door hatchback. The proportions are similar to the i20, but with modern touches like a clamshell bonnet, sleek LED headlamps inspired by the Ioniq 6 facelift, and a coupe-style sloping rear tailgate with slim tail lamps. There is also a distinctive window kink at the rear, hinting at some design influence from the Genesis GV60.
Built on a front-wheel-drive version of the E-GMP platform, the Ioniq 2 will use a 400V architecture to keep costs in check. Expected power outputs are up to 150bhp, while range estimates hover around 400km on a full charge, positioning it well for urban buyers. By opting for a simpler drivetrain layout and moderate battery capacity, Hyundai is aiming for mass-market appeal.
While it is unknown whether the Ioniq 2 will make its way in India, the company has been vocal about its EV ambitions for our market. After the launch of the Ioniq 5 and the Creta Electric, Hyundai could be working on a more affordable EV. That said, the Ioniq 2, with its compact footprint, practical five-door design, and relatively affordable EV credentials, could be an ideal compact EV for India.
