Maruti Suzuki sold 180,526 cars in July 2025, marking a 3.1 per cent year-on-year growth. While the big picture appears alright, a deeper dive into the data reveals an increasing reliance on export markets and the mid-size segment to drive the growth.
Maruti’s hatchback range, which includes popular models such as the Baleno, Swift, and WagonR, remains the brand’s strongest pillar. With 65,667 units sold in July, the segment grew nearly 12 per cent over the same month last year. On the flip side, the entry-level segment, which includes the Alto and S-Presso, saw a sharp 31.5 per cent drop in sales, with just 6,822 units sold. This nosedive highlights a long-term market shift away from entry-level cars, likely driven by increased ownership costs and a changing customer mindset that now leans towards larger, feature-rich models.
Maruti’s relatively premium range, including the Brezza, Fronx, Jimny, and the Grand Vitara dropped by 6.3 per cent compared to July 2024. Maruti sold 52,773 units of these models last month, a sign that intense competition from rivals like Hyundai, Mahindra, and Tata is starting to eat into its market share.
Now, if there’s one clear win for Maruti Suzuki in July, it’s exports. The company shipped 31,745 units overseas, a solid 32 per cent jump from July 2024. In a domestic market showing signs of saturation, this growth reflects a strategic pivot toward international markets, particularly in Asia and Latin America.
Overall, Maruti Suzuki remains a volume leader in the Indian market thanks to its midrange line-up of cars performing strongly. However, slowing domestic growth, faltering demand for entry-level models, and rising competition in the SUV space suggest the brand can no longer depend solely on its legacy strengths.
Maruti's export is now its biggest growth area, offering a buffer against a maturing and hyper-competitive Indian automotive landscape. Going forward, global diversification and new product launches, especially in the SUV and alternative fuel space, will be critical to maintaining Maruti’s dominant position.
