This is the 2019 Ford Ranger FX4, finally caught testing in production metal with its showroom face. Up until this point we have only seen the FX4 testing with heavy camouflage.
The Ranger FX4 will get added ground clearance and styling tweaks to make it unique from the standard Ranger. On this prototype we can make out that the grill appears to have a very Explorer-like feel to it. In other markets, the current FX4 can be had with a 3.2-litre diesel engine found in the Transit. It's unclear if it will be offered in US models, but the Ranger could be offered in a number of configurations to compete against the Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon.
Expect a full complement of Ecoboost four and six cylinder engines and perhaps a diesel too. Ford might use the direct injected twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 as the premium choice. Ford's new ten-speed automatic, co-developed with GM, is also expected.
The 2019 Ranger FX4 is likely to make its debut next year, possibly in Detroit.
