Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the next generation Polo hatchback at an event in Germany. This is the sixth generation for the German automaker’s budget hatchback and it sports a new design as well as a completely updated feature list. The car will be available with three petrol, two diesels and a new natural gas engine which is a first for the Polo family. To give you an idea of what the new car is all about here is a picture gallery of the new Polo.

1.    In typical Volkswagen fashion, the design of the new Polo is evolutionary and there is a great sense of familiarity when you first look at the car. The bulge on the bonnet is bigger while the head lamps are now sharper units with LED DRLs and projectors as standard.

2.    Looking at the side you can notice that the car is now bigger (breaching the four metre mark) and wider. As a result, it sits lower on bigger wheels. However, the roofline has not been altered too much and the car still retains its forward sloping stance.

3.    As a result of the car becoming wider and longer, the familiar square tail lamps now appear to have moved closer to the edge of the car. The car in our pictures has been give the R-Line treatment and so gets a chunky rear bumper and dual exhausts with chrome surrounds.

4.    This is the first new Volkswagen car to be offered with additional Active Info Display. This is similar to Audi’s virtual cockpit and when chosen as an option replaces the physical instrument cluster with a digital display (in the range of 6.5-inches to eight inches) and can display a variety of car and driver related information.

5.    In addition to the Active Info Display, this new Volkswagen Polo in the higher spec models as well as trims like the GTI, get an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that by the look of things has support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the range.

6.    We particularly liked the rendering that Volkswagen had issued for the new Polo before the launch which shows the hatchback as a two door model. However, as a rule, Volkswagen has announced that across the range, the Polo will only be offered as a four door option.

7.    This new Volkswagen Polo is now underpinned by the MQB platform and will share much of its base with other models under the VW umbrella like the Golf, Tiguan, Skoda Yeti, Skoda Octavia and the four A-series vehicles from their luxury brand, Audi.
