The Mitsubishi Pajero was imported to India in March 2002 as a completely built unit. Hindustan Motors then relaunched the Pajero Sport for the Indian market in March 2012. It is now in November 2014, that the company has added an automatic variant of the car. At present, the vehicle is assembled at the manufacturer’s Tiruvallur facility in Chennai.

Exterior

The Pajero Sport portrays the qualities of a traditional SUV with its huge size and menacing look. The vehicle now gets a chrome front grille and is available in two two-tone paint schemes - flame red with white and lemon yellow with white. Apart from the new chrome-plated vertical bar-type front grille, the car sports a silver front skid-plate, front fog lamps, chrome-plated OVRMs, black roof rails and a high-mounted stop lamp.

Interior

The cabin of the seven-seateris spacious and gets beige leather upholstery and it also comes loaded with a lot of features like a 2-DIN audio system, a new infotainment system loaded with navigation, reverse parking camera and automatic climate control. Other equipment include windshield sunshade, sunglass pocket on the ceiling, door courtesy lamps, cargo room lamp, front room lamp with map lamps, vanity mirror with lid for sun visors, front cup holders on floor console, chrome on door handles, accessory socket, cargo floor box and needle punch carpets. On the safety front, the SUV is loaded with features like Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body design, collapsible steering column, side door impact bars, anti intrusion brake pedal, brakes with vacuum booster, dual SRS airbags and ABS with EBD.

Engine and Gearbox

The Pajero Sport is powered by the 2.5-litre intercooled turbocharged DOHC common rail DI-D engine that churns out 175bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. While the power figure is the same for all models, the torque figure has come down by 50Nm in the automatic variant. The AT variant will be available only in rear-wheel-drive unlike the AWD system in the manual version. The transmission options include the five-speed manual and the five-speed automatic gearbox.

Price and Competition

Starting with a revised price tag of Rs 23.5 lakh, the Pajero Sport rivals the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and the Hyundai Santa Fe.
