Mahindra launched their latest SUV – a sub-four-metre car built on the new Scorpio platform and called the NuvoSport. The NuvoSport replaces the Mahindra Quanto in the Indian carmaker’s extensive line up of SUVs from the KUV100 to the Ssangyon’s Rexton.
The NuvoSport styling is interesting. The decked up front fascia has a black hexagonal grille with vertical slats. The angular headlamps sit below the LED eyebrow-like daytime running lamps. The front bumper gets a bull-bar like blacked out lower half with a silver accent for a faux bash plate. The bonnet gets a wide slit for air intake. It is only when you move to the sides is that you are reminded of the Quanto. The body shell with the blacked out pillars gets cladding on the bottom. The tail is from the Quanto with new clear lens tail lamps.
Mahindra has given occupant safety its’ due importance. ABS and EBD with dual front airbags is standard across all variants except for the N4 where you can opt for the safety package. Power steering with tilt adjustment and power windows are standard. A 2-Din music system is available from the N6 trim with the top end N8 getting a 6.2 inch touchscreen unit. The top-spec car gets daytime running lamps, 16inch alloys, rear spoiler, reverse parking sensors and height adjustable driver seats.
The 1.5-litre three turbocharged diesel engine from the Quanto continues to perform its duties under the hood of the NuvoSport. The three-cylinder m-Hawk engine develops 100bhp of power and 240Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and is also available with an AMT. Suspension has been retuned and the NuvoSport is expected to handle better than the outgoing Quanto. The sub-four-metre SUV is built on the new Scorpio platform and hence will be lighter than the Quanto.
With the launch of the Vitara Brezza, the dynamics of the sub-four-metre compact SUV segment have changed. With the NuvoSport priced at a premium over the TUV300 and the recently updated Ford EcoSport in that segment, the buyers are certainly spoilt for choice.
