Volvo India gets 700 XC40 cars for 2018

- The first batch of 200 XC40s sold in less than a month

- Volvo has targeted 100-150 units per month after the initial rush

- Overall sales target at 3,000 units for CY 2018

Volvo India has slowly started gaining momentum in the Indian car market after shedding its old-school image with the redesign of their entire fleet. Their entry-level SUV, the XC40, has been their most successful product with all 200 units of the first lot being sold out within a fortnight.

Wanting to capitalise on the swell, Volvo has allotted 700 units of the XC40 for sale over the next five months in India. Volvo is expecting the SUV to average between 100 to 150 units every month in addition to the sales of the XC90, the XC60, the S90 and the V90. 

Volvo is already building the XC90 and the S90 in India and the XC60 will soon join the other two on the SPA-platform-based production line. The XC40 is based on the CMA platform which means it might need a new assembly line. While that means sizeable investment on Volvo’s part, but the Swedish car maker has big plans for the Indian subcontinent. The new V40 and the first-ever S40 are certainly in the making, but they will need at least one more year for their global debut, which means we can get them by 2020.

While the XC40 will help Volvo work towards its target of selling 3,000 cars in 2018, the CMA-based cars will push it to 5,000 in 2020.
