Volkswagen caught testing the T-Roc R on the sly

-    The all-new T-Roc will receive the R treatment with lowered chassis, bigger wheels, and quad exhausts.

-     Although the undisguised test mule had the regular T-Roc body, we expect sportier bits to be added later.

-    It will be powered by Golf R’s 310bhp 2.0-litre motor with all-wheel-drive.

Volkswagen was spotted discreetly testing the high-performance T-Roc near their Brunswick factory in Germany. The non-camouflaged test mule was wearing the standard crossover body but the quad-exhaust set-up at the back along with the R-Motion badging was a giveaway that this was indeed a T-Roc R. 

The production-ready T-Roc R won’t look anything like the test mule we see here. The sporty crossover will have a lowered ride height thanks to the tuned suspension. It will ride on a larger set of wheels as well. Since the test mule had the standard car’s bodyshell, we can see two faux exhaust ports on the rear bumpers. So we expect a sportier diffuser with provision for quad-exhaust set-up for the final design.

Powering the T-Roc R will be the same motor from the Golf R. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the Euro-spec Golf R will produce anything between 300-350bhp of power in the crossover. The twisting force of 400Nm will be channelled to the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. The optional Performance Package will get a bigger bump in power output with some additional sportier bits. 

After the T-Roc R, Volkswagen also plans to develop a Tiguan R. Furthermore, Volkswagen will expand its sportier R line with the Arteon R, but that is uncertain at the moment. The T-Roc R is expected to be revealed later this year at any major auto show. It will lock horns with the upcoming Audi SQ2 and Hyundai Kona N, apart from the BMW X2 xDrive20d M-Sport and Mini Countryman S.
