Following the success of the i10, Hyundai Motor India today launched its latest model – the i20, a premium compact car -- for its discerning Indian costumers. The premium i20 hatch is a significant addition to the new generation of Hyundai vehicles identified by the 'i' prefix
Designed to meet the high quality standards, the five-door i20 offers a large interior cabin and stylish exteriors. Featuring Hyundai's distinctive design motifs – a body coloured radiator grille flanked by piercing teardrop headlamps at the front and a striking rear light clusters – the i20's modern lines are further strengthened by neat detailing, including colour-co-ordinated bumpers, sills and wing mirror.

The i20's well-packaged interior boasts of generous levels of standard equipment. All the i20 models have AC/heating, tilt & telescopic steering, 60:40 split folding rear seats, dual tone beige interiors, 2 DIN CD + MP3 Music System, front & rear power windows, refrigerated glove box, a multi information display (which includes trip distance, engine running time, calendar, clock, temperature and audio display) and tachometer, as standard equipment. While the top-end model of the i20 comes with features like fully automatic A/C, leather wrapped steering wheel and TGS knob, steering mounted audio control (a first for this segment), foldable key with keyless entry function, alloy wheels, height-adjustable driver seat, electrically foldable and adjustable outside mirrors and the category first six airbags.

The Hyundai i20 is a five door hatchback car which made its debut at the 2008 Paris Motor Show in October 2008 and arrive on sale in late 2008 — to fit between the i10 and i30 and to replace the Getz.

A new 1.2-litre petrol engine will be available along with a revised version of the company's existing 1.4-litre unit and a 1.6 from the i30. A new 1.4-litre CRTD plus a 1.6-litre will be the diesel units offered at launch. All will produce 64.2mpg and 116g/km of CO2.

Exterior Nothing much to write about the styling. Its Uber Cool 😎.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Packed with lots of features. The interior looks well built with good quality materials unlike the Marutis, but not up to the mark of the Germans. There are lots and lots of features like gear shift indicators, climate control. I am yet to discover all the features. The sun roof is sadly stopped for the diesel version. Would have been a better buy with that. Also, the driver arm rest is missing. If you could provide it in Getz, why not in i20?

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Excellent CRDI engine. there is a small turbo lag, but its not noticable as seen in the Verna. Great mileage. Getting almost 12 in the city and 16-17 in the highways. Gearbox could have been better. The Getz gearbox was butter smooth (I previously owned a Getz).

Ride Quality & Handling The real pain area is the high speed stability and the steering. Come on Hyundai, i20 deserved a pure hydraulic unit as seen in the Getz. The steering is very vague in high speeds and there is a mild body roll to add to it. Should have the option of a 15 inch tyres. I am planning to change the tyres to 15 inchers (Guys, does this affect the warranty?). The braking was excellent with the all 4 disc breaks and ABS.

Final Words Well, its an excellent city vehicle that does not that bad in the highways. A good family car though. Goes well with the family who does like to drive in 100-120 in highways. 140+, the vehicle feels unstable, eventhough the engine doesnt feel strained. I was in 120 in the 6th gear and the rpm was aroung 2400 only. Still in the power band. But, if you are an enthusiast who likes high speed, please go for the Punto 90HP. Its much better in the highway.

Areas of improvement It is already giving Hyundai a terrific run. 8000+ cars every month in the premium hatchback is just awesome. Addition of 15 inch tyres and a hydraulic steering can throw the Punto and polo out of the contention. Now, the Punto and Polo beats i20 only in the handling part.

      Thanks

      Rakesh

Great Looks, Interior Quality, Excellent CRDi engine, Good bac seat comfort, Big bootVery light Steering- deserved the hydraulic unit used in Getz, High speed stability

I have already enjoyed 1180 Kms ride of i20 . It's performance is excellent with lot of comfort . I have driven this car  to chandigarh & Amritsar from Ludhiana. The fuel economy  with 4 adults + 2 Kids on both the trips was more than 18 + Kms with AC ( 65 % AC under on condition ). In city conditions like Ludhiana with lot of congestion , the average is 12 + Km
I would rather term comfort of this car as better than sedans costing 10 - 12 lacs as its seats are broad & front + rear leg space is good.
I being 5'11" height have enjoyed its driving without having trouble with legs.
Engine noise is negligible. Even at the speed of 120 Km (on highway to Amritsar ) , the car performance / ride is very smooth due to excellent design by German engineers ( Hyundai ) as Hyundai has very well taken care of center of gravity of the car.
Interriors are good & dashboard with two colors is remarkable with lot of features like temprature display , time lag , song display , music system control etc.....
Undoubtly excellent car by Hyundai. .
I am thankful to all the readers of this review and their respective comments, leaving apart few ones which are not healthy ones.

      Hi folks

I have been a regular visitor to this website and got great help in choosing my car.

I got my lovely i20 delivered in May. This is a review of the car after completion of 1500 Km.

The car has got everything you can want from a car(Space, ABS, 6 airbags, Steering mounted audio contorls, etc etc etc). Its will and already has created a separate market for itself. The interiors are class apart. The steering is also really smooth. It has got the space, looks, comfort, luxury. The AC of the car is really amazing for this segment.

I also read some comments on the website stating the car is underpowered and has a pulling problem. I would only like to state, that pulling problem is only if you are a bad driver. The car is got adequate power. I have driven the same from Mumbai to Shirdi with 4 people, luggage and AC on and didnt find any problem even while driving up the Kasara ghats. The journey was very comfortable for all the passengers even at the rear.

I aggree it cannot be a race machine and maybe a 1400 cc larger engine will be a very good option for people who would not mind compromising on mileage for power. But for mileage concious people like me (mostly city driving) this is a great package of power & class. Initiallly (first 1000km) I used to get mileage of around 11KM in city with AC. But after which it has improved and currently am getting around 12km and expecting to improve to around 13 to 14Km in city with 75% AC after 2nd service. My friend who owns an i20 had a similar experience and now after the 2nd service is getting 13-14KM in the city. I think it is pretty neat for a car which offers good luxury and driving pleasure.  The only con I feel is lack of a diesel engine and maybe its around 25K costlier.

To conclude I would say I had done a lot of research (test drove the swift which I think was the closest competitor) before buying this car and trust me could not find any car in its class offering such features and quality for around 6 lakh price tag. On the maintainence front, I am rest assured as this is my 3rd Hyundai car and only thing I spent on maintainence of previous 2 cars is a pretty reasonable AMC fee that I pay once a year to Hyundai my car is completly taken care off(servicing, oil change, etc) for the whole year without any hassels.

Any comments and clarifications are welcome from anyone who is confused on buying a car in this segment and would need any help or clarification.

I purchased I20 Asta(o) With Sunroof 1 month ago and have already driven 1700 KMs. Initially, after a lot of market research and feedback from other users, I had zeroed on three cars - 1. Vista Aura, 2. Skoda Fabia, 3. Hyundai I20. What made me go for I20 is its great appearance, interiors, features and comfort level. Here also there were three choices - Magna, Asta and Asta(o). I had almost decided to go for Asta, but in showroom I got inside Asta(o) and the sunroof was so stylish, I decided to expend a little more for it. Since this is a new features, everybody wants to have a look once it is open. On the highways and in winter season, it is very pleasurable to drive with sunroof open. The interiors are of high quality with lot of features like steering mounted audio controls, cool glove box, trip meter, outside temperature indicator, Automatic temp control, electrically operated and adjustable ORVMs, height adjustable driver seat, adjustable steering, etc. With four speakers and two tweeters, The quality of music system is also good as there is no distortion or noise even at full volume. Additionally you can connect your USB drive or Ipod also. Engine is very silent and you can hardly notice any noise or vibration if the window glasses are up even at higher speeds. The pick up is fairly good and sufficient for average user. Even at the speed above 100, the car is very stable. With ABS, six airbags and other safety features, one feels very confident on highways. However, you need to slow down on bumps as the ground clearance is lesser compared to other cars. The mileage is something between 12-14 with A/C occasionally on. The boot space is large and comparable to sedan. The rear seat leg space is average but in front, it is surprisingly large. The seats are very comfortable and the inside space is well managed. The steering is so smooth and responsive, you cannot resist yourself driving this car. Overall, the car is a premium hatchback with better features than many other luxury sedans. I have still not had any problem and am really enjoying driving this car. Highly recommended!!Good Looks, Great styling, Superb interiors and features, Great comfort LevelGround clearance

Hi, I personally dont believe that I-20 is an overpriced car, please note that the additional features like Air bags, ABS, 2 din music system, steering height adjustment and moulded audio controls, rear disc breaks, higher engine displacemet 1.4L (i-20), 1.3L (swift), higher power(90 i-20 -75 swift), electric foldable mirrors, 2 tone beige interiors, alloy wheels, automatic climate control, rear wiper and washer, defogger, 60:40 split seats ( in swift full foldable), driver seat height adjustment, more boot space, all of these contribute approximately 1,75,000 rs. Ex-show room price  of swift in bangalore - 496,465, where as i-20 is 683,431. The difference of 186,966 can be justifyable for the saftey and luxury it has been offering. If we say swift is an VFM, certainly i-20 is also a VFM .It has so many additional features, luxury and safety  which are put in the right place, which makes the car a worth buy.If money is not a concern, then definately i would prefer i-20 Asta CRDI in the premium hatchback segment. Altough i am not a professinal in this field, i have tried to analyse few major things which were posssible from my side. please post your comments on this.

      Thanking you.

I was looking for a car with a budget of around 6-7lacs. So obviously i had swift (ZXi), Skoda Fabia (Ambient) and i20 (Asta) in my mind. First I chkd out with skoda and learned that maintaining a skoda would prove me a bit more expensive than all other cars at this range. So even without giving a second thought i dropped that from my list. I had swift in my mind. Considering it to be a 3-4yr old model i had a dilemma in my mind. I took a test drive. Believe me, the pick up is very gud in swift. But Maruti has spoilt the interiors in swift. The Integrated Audio system is as bad as it could be which has eaten up all the looks of the swift. Moreover, there is no option of connecting yr USB drive. This makes it even worse as we have to upgrade to the latest technology always. I had a doubt on Mileage as well at it is a 1298cc engine (100% AC). Just because this was not gud, i dint drop. But, this part of the interior cannot be replaced/changed so easily. i dint bother to give a tot abt VXi as this wud come without any amazing features and it wud cost me the same thing if i ad planned for an upgradation. Moreover, adding a steering mounted audio control is very dificult. Then i considered an i20 and mind you, this is best vehicle in the class that i have seen. It has everything, from well-designed interiors to good exteriors as well. The audio sys is gud, AC is better than in swift, The alloys are better than swift for better road grip and I easily went for it. The only thing that i had to compromise for was for a 1198cc engine which is about 100cc less than swift but i dint feel that low power when i took the test drive. Moreover i was looking for a better mileage as my driving is limited to city atkeast 99% of the times.i20 is designed with precision and the fit and finish of all the components (interior and exterior) is as good as it can be. And as we all know, hyundai has a lesser maintainence cost than skoda, so i finalised this and bought one as well. Interiors has a good audio player (integrated) well designed steering mounted audio controls, Central locking, tilt steering for comfort. driver seat height adjustment, electrically controlled mirrors which means both the mirrors are controlled internally with the help of switches, airbags for safety, good control on highways with ABS and EBD...the list goes on and on. I feel i20 is worth for the value of money. I dont see anything negative with is, if i find any i will update for sure. Have Fun!Style is very good. Interiors are excellent. The fit and finish of everything is absolutely perfect.People say the space is less but i dont think so. Everything seems to be in place in this.

The advantage of the i20 lies in the fact that you get a lot of car for very little money. By falling under the 1.2 litre engine and the under 4 metre length tax bracket the i20 manages to keep a relatively inexpensive price tag, which by the way is just 5.6 lakh ex-Delhi. So Hyundai have managed to stuff her to the gills and more, and all of it is packaged tightly in very neat trim that speaks volumes of just how classy Hyundai have gotten. The Asta variant we tested comes with ABS, driver and passenger airbags, a geek-loving audio system that will hook up with any portable audio device, a multi information digital display and climate control. But what you don’t expect to get is the kind of space reserved for a C-segment entrant. There’s loads of leg and shoulder space in the rear bench area and you also get a very useful boot. That makes it a very practical and utilitarian car. And slightly boring in the bargain for the enthusiast driver, it must be said! You cannot get both fantastic fuel efficiency and fantastic performance rolled into a single package. Forget it! So since the i20 does some 13.8kmpl in the city and 18.5kmpl on the highway you get a 0-100 sprint of 13.36 seconds. Not slow but not too fast either and certainly nothing that is going to have the enthusiasts lining up outside the showrooms. Quarter mile is demolished in 19 seconds and she will push herself to a (mere?) 147kmph. This is a basic attribute of her gearbox which is attuned to easing revs for better efficiency not rushing them on to glorious 0-100 times. The person Hyundai is looking at attracting, however, is a more sensible more mature clientele for whom the over-servoed steering works wonderfully. It’s so light that it requires little more than one finger to execute a lock to lock turn. Sadly the lightness does not go away when on the highway which is what enthusiasts are looking for so that there is a bit more precision and confidence evoked. Enthusiastic wheel twirling is not a rewarding sensation and mountain road bashing is not at this Hyundai's heart of hearts. Nevertheless Hyundai have built in a fantastic braking system which has ABS with EBD to make it stop on a dime. 100-0 takes just 43.02 metres and 80-0 is done in 26.86 metres. Now go look at what the competition has to offer, go ahead take a look, and be amazed. In the overall the i20 comes across as a very competent car and one that will do quite well for the short inner city commute, creating little fuss and enhancing ownership costs. And that in this day and age is all that the masses ask for from their personal wagons.fantastic fuel economy , good style , class interiors, performance , ac , handling , gearshiftless ground clearence , pricey

This car is good so long as you are not on move.It has low pulling power for both city and highway driving,1200 cc engine is too small for a large hatch, price is very high ,better to go for Swift which is both faster ,cheaper and more fuel efficient. In any case if you are happy with slow pick up,better buy Fabia.

In desire of getting rid of Maruti, My search started for Hyundai. Before Buying my current car "Maruti ALTO Lxi" I had plan for  Santro..Maruti never appealed me. Although considering saving of some buks & Maintc cost ( we all grow, and that some buks is actually v v less now i.e.after 2yrs). ALso I never saved in Maintenance cost, as Price of Spares may be10% cheaper but quality sucks.

Getz was the prime choice. But they have dropped the production. Hard Luck. i20 dint came in picture.

Then comes UVA....test drive....some what convincing and ofcrse seemed to be BEst buy @4L on road price -delhi + expenses 10K for stereo, 5K for Remote Cntrl Lock. Advantage I found is spacious and feels better in driving. Gear shift too wide, gear postion not comfortable. Pickup not good.

Well then comes Swift (for me its last & no choice). Exterior looks- depends person to person. Interior - typical Maruti style. Grey Plastic all over, which I hate. riving comfort - better than UVA. Cooling better then UVA. Pickup again is better. Felt like I have no choice and will again get into Maruti's trap.

I fought hard with myself and decided to try lower segment.

i10 Was the next game. Road Test experience was good. Found engine good but slightly sluggish @1st gear. Power stearing was also bit sluggish but not disturbing. Cooling is Good. Drive comfort was not convincing. For metro drives (more than 1hr) I found it not very comfortable. Style is excellent, interior beautiful , Gear Shift very positive and beautiful.

Three things which it lacks is : Long drive nt v comfortable ( also depends on individual), Small Car , although space is good in its class, Not goo in absorbing shocks on uneven road. No Blame to i10 , but I was looking something else and more.

I stretched my budget by 50K and reached @ 5L budget.

NExt option came as Maruti diesel version, i20, Fabia, Logan, an some other old models.

Diesel- nt interested , Maruti - wanna avoid it , Fabia - Worried abt Maintenance and service network. Logan- not for me, If u have driver close ur eyes n buy Logan .

Driving comfort is my prime concern.

i20 is the option I wanted to Explore. My Test Drive Experience is as:

      1. Feels Upper class from inside,

      2. Space not a problem in fact best in its class an better than some upper segment cars.

      3. Interior - very impressive.

      4. Features Excellent in ite class...some upper segment class car will hide faces.

      5. Engine felt much better than i10.....I dont know how ....but response was excellent and enough.

6.driving comfort - thigh support, seats, seat adjustable, stearing angle, side supports....jus amazing.

      7. Shock absorbing capability on rough roads....jus excellent...YES Hyundai is better then Maruti.

      8. Integrated electronic systems like MP3,digital dipaly - Good.

I found it upper class and ont want to compare it with Swift etc. This car is different and is definitely for people who want features, comfort .

9 Fuel economy , they claim higher but I know will get around 12 -13 which is ok for me.

Overall , My suggestion is If u r planning for new car  5L is budget, u r not die hard fan of maruti,

Dont read too much here...GO n Try these cars. Take Test drive and feel the difference.

Do reply after test drive I shall be waiting for your comments.

Ya one more thing I have booked this Model ; )

I know there will be lot of Maruti Fans here , No hard feelings for Maruti . But ye choice aur class ka mamla hei.

NOTE  FOR people here mentioning 1.2L engine not enough for i20,I guess they have not tried the car. Guys go n get the test drive. I tried i10 & i20. i knew the engine is same and after driving i10 had expectation that i20 will not be that responsive.
I WAS WRONG.U will never feel that the engine is same.Excllnt engine and very refined.  ofcrse 1.3 will make it sporty but no complaints with 1.2L
Driving exprnce is amazing..which one'll never get in any Maruti. Excllnt ride,gr8 feature, best sound proofing. It wins in its class and challenges upper class.

Before booking I took 8 Test Drives to clear all my doubts. I suggest you to go for at least 3 test drives (with gap of 2 days for same model) for any car u wanna buy.
