Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222) [2018-2022] vs Mercedes-Benz S-Coupe

The art of making consistently brilliant cars is a difficult one and no one does it better than Mercedes-Benz, particularly with the S-Class which is incidentally also known as ‘the best car in the world’. With each new generation the S-Class brought in benchmark technology that placed it a step ahead of the competition every time. The car is question here isn’t a new generation car but a facelift of the W222 model. So you get minor updates on the outside, new features and technology and more importantly two new engines.

As you can see in the pictures the Mercedes S63 Coupe is not your regular S-Class limousine. Instead of rivalling the likes of the BMW 7 Series or the Audi A8, Mercedes has tried to build a grand tourer, which can double up as a sports car. This puts the S63 Coupe in direct competition with the might of the Bentley Continental. Now that’s a big ask considering Mercedes can’t compete against the Bentley as an aspirational brand. So Mercedes really has to nail it with the S63 Coupe in terms of product to stand any chance. Priced at Rs 2.6 crore, this Coupe is exorbitantly expensive for a car carrying a Mercedes badge. But bearing in mind the Bentley Continental GT is a massive Rs 70 lakh more, this AMG suddenly starts making a lot of sense.

On paper, making a sporty Mercedes-Benz S-Class seems a lot like going mountaineering wearing a pair of stilettos. When we hear the words S-Class, attributes like limousine space, comfort, sublime luxury and a roomy, plush backseat comes to mind. But the S63 AMG coupe is anything but that. It is shorter, has only two doors, the front seats are given more precedence than the rear and it has a fire breathing 577bhp V8 motor under the long sculpted hood. With the S63 coupe, Mercedes has tried to make a car which not only shouts technology and top-notch quality but it also promises to possess style, supercar-rivalling performance and dynamics. But has the German giant succeeded in doing just that?
