Nisrag,

Allow me to welcome you to the CarWale family first. I am elated that some more motorsport enthusiasts are pouring in. Making it to the top level of circuit racing - F1 is not as easy as it seems. I have been a race car driver too and have raced at the national level. You need to get the basics right and have to start from the lower levels of motor-racing. Get familiar with Go-Karting and try to participate in some of the national level championships. If you are able to impress some gods out there, you might be picked up by them to race for their teams. But this is not easy. There are many such guys trying out their luck everyday. Kids as young as 7 years old are racing to get the basics right. It is not just about speed at all. It is about fitness, concentration, reflexes, accuracy, braking points, turning points, hitting the kerb right and more importantly, knowing your machine. I will only give you the ladder, the climb is yours. Start with Go-Karting, race at national level championships, graduate to FISSME which will have you drive a single seater race car with Maruti 800 engine. It sounds alright, but even these machines are mad enough, so to master them takes time. The next level will be a Formula LGB or Hyundai. The top most level as far as Indian motorsport is concerned is the Formula Rolon. The single seaters are powered by Chevy engines and you cannot even imagine the sheer brutality of these cars. The hard work you will have to put in is going to be immense. After that there are international races like Formula Ford or Formula BMW, but even they are a far cry from Formula 1, so it is not an easy climb. Then there is the cost factor. One national level Go-Karting race will cost about 8-10 thousand rupees not considering that you come with your own race kit which will comprise of overalls, gloves, safety helmet, racing/driving shoes etc. The price only escalates as you climb the ladder. FISSME will be about 10-12 thousand while the Rolon can be as high as 20K for a single race, if you are not funded/sponsored by any team. This is not to discourage you, rather I would love to see you up there with the best, but it takes a lot. A LOT! I have experienced it first hand, and the cost factor is really a major concern. And oh yes, start learning about cars, if you start racing, you will be required to know how to set up your car, but that's something that you will get to know after you start with your climb.

Share anything that you have and I will be more than glad to answer you.

All the luck to you.

Cheers!

Thanx Ashish for your valuable information regarding formula races etc...
If i wanna get into National Level Go-Karting Champioship, whom shud i contact??
cud u plzz get me some information... as of now am driving go-kart in chennai..
i wanna drive go-kart national level championship....

Dear Sir,

Thanks your enquiry and pleased to note your passion for car racing.  Without wishing to dampen your enthusiasm, I must advise you that before you can think of F1 which is the highest level of racing in the world, you will need to establish your talent at the National level.

There are only two purpose-built tracks in India , one at Sriperumbudur (near Chennai) and the other at Kari Motor Speeway, Coimbatore.  While training camps for racing are conducted at these tracks  now and then, there is no regular institution for this (see email from Meco Motorsports below)    The 11th JK Tyre National Racing Championship for cars (6 rounds) has been planned  for 2008. (see our calendar of events in our website http://www.fmsci.org/ for dates / venues)   3 classes of racing will be run viz  Formula LGB Swift, Formula LGB Hyundai and Formula Rolon Chevrolet .    All these are specially made Indian Formula cars and  available on hire.  For details on hire, practice, participation, etc  please contact

1) One 2006 Formula 3 Dallara car with a Toms Toyota engine.

2) Two Formula BMW Cars

3) Two Formula Renault 2 litre cars.

Former Formula 3 ace and Alpha Romeo British Touring Car team principal, Gary Ayles and renowned driver coach Andy Pardoe from the UK will be on site to train and educate young drivers with the sophisticated telemetry data systems.

Formula BMW, Formula 3, Formula Renault V6 and A1 GP Engineer Patrick Roberts who has engineered Akbar Ebrahim, Narain Karthekeyan, Karun Chandhok and Armaan Ebrahim in various championships will be on site to educate young drivers the nuances of mechanical and aero race car dynamics.

The programme will be towards the end of April or early May 2008. The venue and the costs will be indicated to all in the next few weeks. This will be a unique opportunity for all teams to give their young drivers a huge opportunity to drive the sophisticated Formula BMW and Formula Renault 2000 cars in India.

The Formula 3 car will be put through its paces by Armaan Ebrahim and will then be available to test drive for those who show exemplary discipline and skills in the FBMW and Formula Renault 2000 cars.

And, this is just the beginning. A lot more is in store for motorsporting enthusiasts in 2008.

Hey everyone,

Yes, I wasn't here for long, hence could not contribute towards this any sooner. I see a lot of activity happening and a lot of guys becoming interested. Now, I would like to point out that the mail received by Arjun from Akbar talks about the international series. As I have always said, it is imperative that you make it big in the Indian series first, else, if approaching the international series directly, it will be hugely expensive.

If at all you are looking at doing something of this magnitude, there's a racing school called Bridgestone Racing Academy in Canada that can be helpful too. You could write to Donna Elliot at donna@race2000.com or info@race2000.com. She can be reached on tel: (905) 983-1114

This post is for Arjun and Parag and I hope they read this.

For Go Kart C'ships, you could try and get into the JK Tyre or MRF Go Karting championships from where you could climb the ladder. Start off by participating in a couple of events which happen near your place.

@ Arjun

If I'm not mistaken, there was a Go karting track called Destination Point on Mathura Road, but the last I heard, it'd closed down. There's one track called 32nd Milestone in Gurgaon, you could try that out.

Hi Arjun,

It's sad to know that even 32nd Milestone has shut its operation down. Now, I am afraid, there are no more Go-Karting tracks in the NCR. There are however a couple of professional race tracks at Sriperumbedur (MMST) and Coimbatore (Kari Speedway) where national level races are held regularly.

As for racing schools, Naren Karthikeyan started his Team NK where he trains racers who've proved themselves or have shown good potential. You could get in touch with either MAI (Motorsport Association of India) or FMSCI to get more details. Furthermore, you could contact Akbar Ebrahim since he runs MECO Motorsport at Chennai and could be of immense help. You could reach him at:  (044) 42125139 /40.

Well, it is not necessary that you try Go-Karting, but is hugely advisable. If you cannot handle the Rotax karts, you wouldn't be able to hold a candle to the formula racing cars. Still, nothing to take away from you, you can get in touch with MAI officials and ask them about the entry procedure. You will have to fill the grid as an individual but if you do well, some team bosses could take notice of you.

@ Mahendra,

Please refer to this post to know more about how to get started in motor-racing.

@ Brendan

I am afraid, there are no motorsport academies in Maharashtra. You could practice at Powai (Mumbai)or Kohlapur though. As for training, try contacting Akbar Ebrahim, he will be able to guide you best. Chennai and Coimbatore race-tracks (Sriperumbedur & Kari respectively) are the one where most of the national level races are held.

Hello everyone,

Once again, I am elated to say that more and more people are getting interested in motorsport. Although it is heartening to know that everyone is aiming at F1 directly, it is imperative that one starts climbing the ladder one step at a time. I urge you all to kindly go through this post, then work towards entering domestic motorsport and take the climb from there.

Cheers!

Dear Ashish,

Can you please confirm how anybody can start participating in Car racings.

We all know that its not only about accelaration but anybody who generally drive vehicles at fast speed wants to join the group.  Same with me. Usually I drive the vehicle until it raches at max speed or race paddle stops - max throttle, whatever the road conditions. Now I want to take it further in my life & want to explore my expertise into motor racing. You are requested to suggest the first level so that I can start without any further delay. I know i m going to win the F1 very soon but a good start is required so kindly advise.

You are requested to reply on email IDs : ani_sharma@yahoo.com  + 91- 9313335571
