It was my first car and it had to be a Palio. I was quite keen on buying a 1.6 but after intensive hunting I realized that most of the Palio 1.6’s were either not available for sale or if they were on sale, they were brutally driven. None of the 1.6 Palio cars I tried were inspiring confidence to go and buy it. Started hunting for a Palio 1.2 instead. Had to go see three Palios that evening, after office. One was in terrible condition, and the dealer was pretending to be the owner of the car. Second was in good condition but the owner wasn’t interested in maintaining it considering the fact that it was his company-owned car. The third Palio I saw is the one I finally bought. It was in immaculate condition with just 28k kms on odo in five years. The seller was a thorough gentleman and the deal went through pretty smoothly. Only interesting incidence around this is that I was in such a hurry that I wire-transferred the whole 1.4L in his account the previous evening without even seeing the car for the second time (first time it was pretty dark night). Neither car nor the owner looked suspicious.

Palio’s exterior is admirable, especially its grille and boot part. Boot-lid and tail-lamps design complement each other. Being the top-of-the-line ELX variant, it has got body coloured bumpers, door handles and ORVMs. The black protection moulding around the waistline on white colour of the car makes it a looker. I’ve owned the car for close to three years and I still love to see it stand-still from a distance, preferable from my terrace! A very useful and rare feature on Palio ELX (probably lower versions too) is its ability to be opened/locked from either front door. That means, you can lock or unlock the car (all doors i.e. central locking) from either driver-side door or the co-driver side door!

Interior though dated, still looks nice. Personally I like the grey interior of my Palio over the beige introduced later in Stile versions. My car has got grey fabric upholstery, it never appealed to me, especially the texture and I later upgraded the seats to great-quality genuine leather seat covers. Seats are pretty large for a small car and are very comfortable. I have done quite a few long distance journeys and I’ve had no complaints from the seating point of view. Headroom, legroom for front as well as rear passengers is more than adequate for four passengers. Five adults can adjust but at the cost of comfort.

Some of the important equipments/features are all four power windows with windows lock switch (child safety), central locking, pretty effective AC, cigarette-lighter/power outlet, rear defogger and rear wash wiper. Rear defogger and wash wiper are a boon in rainy and foggy days. One major issue I find in Palio is lack of internal storage space. There is a small storage space in below the central console but it’s quite inadequate. There is also storage space in dash, above glove-box but that’s unusable because of the way it’s designed. Things put in this space are prone to skidding/falling out etc.

Palio 1.2 has got a 71bhp engine. I had heard people talking about its sluggish behaviour and I was pretty apprehensive while buying one. But when I drove the car, I realized that the car has more than enough power for city driving. First three gears are beautiful but lack of power starts giving a bad feel in fourth and fifth gear, especially fifth gear. This problem can be avoided vastly by changing gears in the correct power band. Unfortunately Palio 1.2 (pre-NV) doesn’t have a tachometer and hence this judgement of power band comes from experience. Later I had figured it out and I was quite happy with the performance. The performance on highways, however, wasn’t sufficient when it comes to aggressive driving. Overtaking a speeding vehicle was certainly an issue, especially in early days of my driving.

I’ve also heard people crib about Palio’s fuel economy. If they are to be believed, pre-NV Palio is capable of an economy of 7-9kpl. In my last 3 years of driving this car, it never went below 10kpl, not for once. My driving is pretty short, multiples of 2-3kms stretches hence it’s very difficult to churn out good mileage. I have to do two full-thanks every month and my car goes good 900-1050kms in two fills (84ltrs approx). My recent visit to Nashik (Sai baba) returned good 13kpl, 90% time AC on.

Driving a Palio is a bliss in general, however, there are a couple of major issues. The worst is visibility. The bonnet of a Palio drops steep and driving seat is slightly low. I being a short driver (5’6”), it was very difficult to judge where the left side bumper starting. I still am not too sure and I normally keep 1 foot distance all the time. Centre rear-view mirror is awesome but external ORVMs are terrible. Especially the driver-side one. Thick A-pillars and bad ORVM make a huge blind-spot for the objects immediately close to you. You can easily miss out a bike or even a small car completely. I almost run over a pedestrian the other day! And the next day a friend in office gifted me blind-spot mirrors. They are tiny but are life-savers! Another issue is turning radius. 5.4 metres for a small car is a little too much but one get used to it. I’m pretty perfect at it now.

In my approx 25000kms ownership, the car never brought me any trouble. Sure, there was one tyre bursting scene on Expressway but that was my fault of trying to stretch life of tyres beyond a limit and one incidence of car not starting because of battery failure. Two parts of exhaust system were corroded (aging) and had to be replaced for around 6k. I can’t recall any other repair work. Regular service costs around 1300 rupees from a very knowledgeable and trusted local workshop. The frequency is strictly before six months.

The car weighs over a ton and the weight is not in vain. The car is built like a tank. My car doesn’t have ABS or Airbags but it never gave me an uncomfortable feeling when it comes to safety. I have seen an Innova banging me at 60kph and ended up damaging only the bumper that too had to be straightened and not replaced. The Innova had double the damage than mine! Every time I close the doors, I get this reassuring thump of safety!

Overall a masterpiece from Fiat. Unfortunate that India could never estimate the potential of this car and Fiat, the mother too behaved indifferently. I think I owed this review to my Palio for a long time. I should have done it earlier but if I hadn’t done it today, I may not have done it ever. In a very dramatic situation I bought a Fiesta 1.6 ZXi LE last week and the Palio has to go now. I wish I was in a small town and could have space to keep two cars! :(

Have been running the car for the past 4 years and absolutely no issues/problems in the car. The car gives a safety feeling of sitting inside an armoured vehicle. Has given me a very decent mileage of 11.5 average over the year and love this great car. Recommend a fiat vehicle for anyone looking for a great value for money car.Solid build, great reliability, great looks and super value for moneyOld design on interiors

I have been driving Palio 1.6 GTX for few months now. I thought that I should be shearing my experience with the people.

To start with let me say what I like in the car.
I simply love the way it performs on road. Handling in road is very good. I drove it at around 130 and did not find any vibrations. A.C is very chilling. Its pickup is some thing that I love to praise. I tried overtaking all passing by vehicles and believe me I never faced any problem. I have fitted half free flow exhaust in my Palio & the sound it makes is too good. I just love to drive the car on highway and its simply fun to drive.

Mine is a silver color car and I have place tubeless tyers. It gives my car a great look and enhanced road grip. Over all, a great performing beast & a lovely companion for long drive.

So why the car did not faired good in India?
Service support was the major reason. It’s now that TATA has taken over the service & spare support for Fiat cars. Still you would find difficulty in getting the spares. Just to give an example, I have to change my alternator & believe me I found it very hard to get one. Finally I have to get a second hand from a local Mumbai market.
As the car grows old, electric wiring tends to wear out. Trained technician of TATA service centers where not able to resolve the wiring issues. Again, I have to get help from some local vendor to get it rectified. Fuel is another issue. I always drive my car with A.C on and it gives me a mileage b/w 8.10 to 8.5. I am not aware of mileage it gives when it runs with A.C off.

      Suggestion to the company
If Fiat people can ensure availability of spares and can also get the working staff of TATA service centers properly trained, this car is sure to pick up sales.

      Overall
This is a car for people who love to drive and are passionate road lovers. Driving pleasure is too good to be ignored. You sit in driver seat start the ignition & zoom... it goes like rocket. Switch on the A.C, place a good CD and keep driving.

Might give you some trouble if it’s a second hand car, but still they are manageable. But please do not buy this car if you are average conscious (applicable only to 1.6 GTX).

Great performance, Excellent pickup, good A.C, Great driving thrillPoor fuel economy, service support

I am  an admirer of Fiat, as our family owned a Fiat 1100 (1971 model) for 38 yrs and have just sold it now. I too own a Fiat Palio for last 7 years and it is quite rugged and comfortable car. It gives me fuel efficiency of 10-11 in the city and up to 15 on Highway. I have maintained a full record of each fuel fill and KMs done since the day I bought on 1 July, 2002.Most people do not maintain records and complain about fuel efficiency or do not top up tank at each fill and suffer high evaporation and that lacks accuracy in measurement.

It's  a good family car and rides "chipak ke"very well on the highway - Good handling and easy to maintain.

It used to give me better average of 13 to 14 KM/Ltr when I was in Jaipur for about a year, but gives less in Mumbai traffic, everyone knows about it, as you can hardly drive beyond 3rd Gear and you're mostly struggling with clutch and brake.

I too wanted to book Fiat Linea as my two cousins have recently bought a Fiat Linea each, but finally booked a Maruti Swift Dzire VDI, as I feel that dealer's service is an issue in case of Fiat cars, even though it has been taken over by TATA showrooms now and also the re-sale value of Fiat cars as compared to Maruti cars.

I am likely to get my car delivery by 15th August-09 and will get back on its performance soon after driving it.

Good style and value for money. Fuel average is okay for its size and power.Bad image initially due to fuel eff. Poor response by Fiat / Tata dealers in service.

Fiat Palio, 1.2 , the car I have been using for the past 2 years. Just love this car. It has decent space and ergonomics of the car are brilliant. The car looks small from outside but is very spacious from inside. The handling of this car is really good. The stability of the car at high speed, is wayyyyyyyyyy better than the other cars in its league. The 1.2l engine is quick, really quick. The only disadvantage of this car is its mileage. I believe that can be solved by giving it a DOHC instead of SOHC. The suspension and ride quality of this car is too good to believe. I have driven it over speed breakers at 35-40kms (though that was accidental), but my baby, was calm at it. Even if you go into bumps or anything, it doesn't make you feel uncomfortable. This is a beautiful car to own, and I believe hardly any Palio owner bad mouths his car. Palio owners consider the car as a pride.Performance, Space, HandlingNot so good interior design, SOHC, boot space

      Exterior

its a small car from outside but big from inside,u can only have its feel if u sit inside it

      Interior (Features, Space & Comfort)

simple but rugged and hell lot of space inside with sofa like sitting both at front and at rear

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox

feels like underpowered,FE 12-15 kmpl nice responsive gearbox, though 1st gear seems to be at very low RPM

      Ride Quality & Handling

EXCELLENT ,Handling bit tough due to heavy steering and large turning radius

      Final Words

i own this 3rd hand car for 4 yrs now,it comes with AC and gas (lpg kit).i get 12-15 kmpl, feels like sitting in an armoured vehicle with heavy doors.but issues with the car is big turning radius and spares.i have a love hate relationship with it .had it been a maruti palio i would be first to buy yet another car.

      Areas of improvement

turning radius ,availability of spares at reasonable rates and at time

      solid body build,sitting comfort,space,easy to use console,looksboring interiors,costly spares

The car is a driver's pleasure. One can go till 148kmph on express way & the car dosent even wobbles. I luv driving this car to Goa twice a year instead of going by flight. Believe me u dont get tired in this car even if u have driven more than 650 kms! Major spare parts are difficult to get & the car is high on maintainence. But i dont have any regrets. Cant think of any other car.. Palio is simply awesome.good performance, spacious & pleasure to driveSpare parts are damn expensive & very seldom available, service

Exterior Premium sedan look like POLO LIVA, ect...

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Not bad.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Best in hautch backs.

Ride Quality & Handling Best in class.

Final Words I purchased it from my friend and did 67000 after 4 years.Good engine condition.style and comfort.best value for money for my first car.I used Royal enfield bullet last four years. I am getting same power and driving prestige of bullet with the 1910 cc Disel engine. On over drive we can drive 110 with staility on highways.Best power to weight ratio and pick up. I will recoment to all my friend it should be a precious asset like willys jeep.Palio D is a good buy, please check the condition of Clutch plates if the car has done more than 50K Kms.

Also if you could, try getting the car hooked up to an ECU analyser (at an authorised fiat workshop), it will tell you about the condition of some critical parts/sensors etc.

Areas of improvement I found it a pleasure to drive, both in the city and on the highway. you hardly ever have to change gears even in stop start city traffic.. lost count of the number of times I mistakenly put it in 3rd instead of 1st and yet it never stalled!! Just felt it could use another gear (6th) at times.. .. RPM is a tad high even in 5th gear. Service, Paint finish, Fiber parts quality. user friendlyness.

This is a great car, but one should know about cars before you buy a Palio 1.6 Sport. This car looks simple from outside but turns to be a different one once who start driving it. I have clocked 172kmph on my way from Mysore and have recorded 17kmpl.

One needs to know the pulse of the car before driving or owning.

      Happy driving to all....

      Enjoy madi.

Excellent car. Its a driver's car and one showed know about cars to own a Palio 1.6 sportnothing to bother you.....:)

I could not have asked for a better car to learn driving on. What a graceful beast this vehicle was. Gave good mileage compared to what they claimed. Has lived he full fifteen years and will live longer. Whoever made an investment in this car will love a fiat for the solid build quality, and that's what really matters at the end of the day!
