Fiat Avventura Review
First unveiled at the 2014 Auto Expo, the new Avventura is a compact crossover model from Fiat India. It is based on the Punto platform and shares majority of its underpinnings and interior with the former. It is the Italian automaker’s entry into the now trending hatchback-based compact crossover segment which has been getting a lot of attention from Indian buyers lately. Other players in this segment at the moment include the Volkswagen Cross Polo and the Toyota Etios Cross.
Although the Avventura is is based on the same platform which also underpins the Punto hatchback, it gets rugged design bits like bash plates, plastic cladding and roof rails to make it look like a mini off-roader. The front-end has been modified in the form of sleek headlights that seem to grow out of the side of the hood. It also gets a one piece mesh grill and air intake which have been separated using a grey coloured front bash plate.
On the side, the Avventura has the same overall design as the Punto but appears larger than life thanks to the body cladding and bigger wheels. There is also moulding on the side which has the words Avventura written on it in a rather prominent font. The rear end of the Avventura is dominated by the tailgate-mounted spare wheel and the Punto Evo-sourced taillights. The rear bumper too is taken off the latter to complete the stylish look.Interior
The Avventura has the same interior room as the standard Punto Evo so that means it’s very spacious and has loads of headroom. Given that the entire car has an adventure theme, the interior too has been modified in this manner. Features distinctive to the Avventura include a compass and a tilt meter to lend the feel of a purpose built off-roader. Standard features on the top-spec models include climate control, rear ac vents, adjustable driver seat, electrically adjustable mirrors, audio system with Bluetooth connectivity and alloy wheels. On the safety front, the car has dual airbags and ABS with EBD.
Engine and Gearbox
The Avventura is available with one petrol and one diesel engine option. The 1.4-litre is Fiat’s FIRE engine producing 89bhp of power and 115Nm of torque. The diesel engine is the familiar 1.3-litre Multijet mill churning out 92bhp and 209Nm of torque. These engines are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox that sends power to the front wheels.Competition
The Avventura is currently on sale in the Indian market. It competes against the existing hatchback-based crossover models including the Volkswagen Cross Polo and the Toyota Etios Cross. Fiat India is hoping for this new model to attract a new breed of buyers looking for a rugged looking vehicle but with all the practicality of a compact hatchback.
