The 458 Italia is Ferrari's mid-engined V8 sports car that joined the portfolio in 2012. It is Ferrari’s first mid-engine sports car with a retractable hardtop. The 458 Italia debuted as a 2010 model, replacing the F430 in the Ferrari line-up.

Exterior

The Ferrari 458 Italia body was designed by Pininfarina. The cars exterior styling and features were designed for aerodynamic efficiency, producing a downforce of 140 kg at 200 kmh. In particular, the front grille features deformable winglets that lower at high speeds, in order to offer reduced drag and increased downforce. The nose features a single opening for the grille and two large air intakes to channel air to the engine radiators. The 458 Italia gets a bi-xenon light with low and full beam capabilities and also daylight running lamps which have a stack of 20 high-intensity LEDs.

Interior

Talking about the interiors, not all Ferrari 458 Italia’s are same. Ferrari gives its customer wide range of customisation options. But one of the most interesting facts about the car is that cars interior were designed using input from Formula One driver Michael Schumacher. Particularly the steering wheel, which has been inspired from Formula One cars. Using the steering, one can operate indicators, headlight controls and windscreen wipers.

The instrument panel consists of two leather-trimmed shells which outline the clean forms from which the central aluminium structure emerges that house the instruments. The centre console features an aluminium casting which houses the F1 gearshift panel and its dynamic controls: the launch control button, reverse, and the auto switch to put the gearbox in automatic mode.

Engine & gearbox

The Ferrari 458 Italia is powered by a 4.5-litre V8 direct fuel injection engine that generates 562bhp at 9000rpm and maximum torque of 540Nm at 6000rpm, 80 per cent of which is available at 3250rpm. The power is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automated-manual gearbox that manages to be smooth and incredibly quick - shifts are achieved in four-tenths of a second. The 458 Italia can do 0-100kmph in just 3.3 seconds before reaching an electronically limited speed of 323kmph.

Competition

The Ferrari 458 Italia competes with the recently launched Lamborghini Huracan and the Porsche 911 Turbo
