The A3 sedan marks the beginning of the Audi portfolio offered in India. After its launch in 2014, the car received a midlife update In April 2017. This mid-life update for the German automaker’s entry-level vehicle and includes both mechanical and cosmetic changes. The updated Audi A3 compete with the Mercedes-Benz CLA in the compact luxury sedan segment.
The 2017 Audi A3 facelift takes its cues from the new Audi A4. The changes are largely cosmetic and upfront, there’s the A4-like single frame grille and air dams that are a lot more aggressive looking than before. The LED headlamp cluster now gets the same kink as the A4’s. At the back, the most obvious change are the tail lamps with sharper detailing and dynamic turn indicators. The profile is exactly the same along with the alloy wheels.
The interior is all-black and does look premium with the leather upholstery and the fit and finish. You get wireless phone charging function, dual-zone climate control, a revised three-spoke steering wheel, leather upholstery, panoramic sunroof, front and rear parking sensors and a 7-inch retractable screen for the MMI infotainment system. You have AC vents for the rear passengers and a large 425-litre boot for stowage.
The biggest update on the 2017 A3 can be found as soon as you peek under the hood. In the petrol guise, the A3 has ditched the old 1.8-litre TFSI unit for a smaller albeit gutsy 1.4-litre unit with 150bhp and 250Nm of torque between 1,500 and 3,000rpm. The A3 35 TDI is powered by one of the most popular diesel engines around – a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder TDI unit that makes 141bhp and 320Nm of torque mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox driving the front wheels.
The Audi A3 competes with the Mercedes-Benz CLA which also has recently undergone a facelift.
