Vanquish [2012-2019] Review

The Aston Martin Vanquish was resurrected in 2012 with the introduction of the AM 310 model. Sitting proudly at the peak of the British carmaker's sports car line-up, the Vanquish represents the highpoint of the current Aston Martin design philosophy and engineering.

The Aston Martin Vanquish was resurrected in 2012 with the introduction of the AM 310 model. Sitting proudly at the peak of the British carmaker's sports car line-up, the Vanquish represents the highpoint of the current Aston Martin design philosophy and engineering.

With the exception of the One-77 which was sold in extremely limited numbers, the Vanquish is Aston Martin’s flagship grand tourer.

Exterior

The design of the Vanquish represents the latest take on Aston Martin’s well known visual language. Featuring the same basic design and layout in tune with the old DBS, the Vanquish takes inspiration from the One-77 with design cues such as the elegant waistline, elongated side strakes and the LED rear light blades.

Each body panel on the Vanquish is made using carbon fibre, because of its immense strength and flexibility of form. This not only reduces mass but means that fewer individual body panels are required. All in all, the Vanquish looks very futuristic and thoroughly modern and at the same time retains some hints from the past.

Interior

The interior also draws inspiration from the One-77. Aston Martin, in fact, says that it has emulated the flowing lines, quality and workmanship while introducing significant refinements over the DBS to improve ergonomics and usability.

The interior trim is available in a wide range of materials including fine leather, semi-aniline leather and alcantara, all hand-stitched. Elsewhere inside, the instrument panel is an improved version of the One-77's, with new detailing and better ergonomics. The current AM 310 model retains familiar elements such as the ECU engine start button and gear selection buttons, while introducing a new infotainment system that has been completely redesigned, with a more user-friendly and ergonomic layout.

Engine and Gearbox

The Vanquish is powered by a significantly revised 6-litre V12 petrol engine that powers a variety of Aston Martin models. Mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox, the naturally aspirated engine offers suitably impressive performance figures. Aston Martin claims a peak power of 565bhp, making it their most potent grand tourer yet.

The Vanquish can accelerate from zero to 100kmph in 4.1 seconds and hit a top speed of nearly 300kmph, putting it firmly into supercar territory. As is the modern custom with all Aston Martin models, the engine is hand-assembled at the brand’s engine plant in Cologne, Germany.

The Vanquish uses the latest generation of Aston Martin's VH (Vertical Horizontal) architecture, a lightweight bonded aluminium structure that provides optimum strength and rigidity. In this iteration, the Vanquish tub now includes a significant amount of carbon fibre components. The brand says that the architecture has been re-engineered to control weight and improve packaging.

Competition

The Aston Martin Vanquish is available as a 2+2 or 2+0. The car sits atop Aston’s line-up of sports cars including the DB9, the V8 Vantage and the four-door Rapide. The Vanquish currently has very little in terms of competition although it does compete with the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta which is also a V12 high-performance grand tourer.
