Tata Motors’ Nano, the world’s cheapest car, has been around for about four years and had been a steady seller for the Indian automaker till mid 2012. With competition increasing in the low cost segment with the Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon and the slow but inevitable economic downturn making its way across the auto industry, the Nano seems to be one of the hardest hit, thus making a strong case for a facelifted version. Its future rival includes the Datsun K2 that will be unveiled in July.

The car has already been spotted testing on multiple occasions sans camouflage revealing most of facelifted bits. In the front, the facelifted Tata Nano is almost the same as the current model but now features a large chrome strip running the length of the bonnet in a bid to give the car an upmarket feel. The rear end too gets a large chrome strip just above the bumper and it is likely that the hatch will be openable but only via an internal release mechanism.

The pictures also show that an additional air intake on the rear bumper for increased cooling. The interiors of the facelifted 2013 Nano have not changed much. It still retains the same overall design including the centrally mounted instrument cluster.

There are also reports suggesting that the car is scheduled for two major updates which are expected to give the interiors features like a glove box, music system as well as most importantly power steering. All these updates will definitely make the car a more attractive package in the A segment.

The facelifted Tata Nano will continue to be powered by the same 624cc petrol mill that produces 38PS and 51Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via four-speed manual gearbox. As a part of the update cycle, the Nano is also expected to get a CNG dual fuel option with fuel filler nozzle being located to petrol one.

We expect that Tata will price the facelifted Nano about Rs 10, 000 to Rs 15, 000 more than the equivalent variants of the current car. The Tata Nano competes in the A-segment with the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and the Alto and the Hyundai Eon. If the CNG option is offered across all trim levels then the higher spec Nano CX will compete with Maruti Suzuki’s range of small CNG powered cars like the Wagon R and the Estilo CNG.
