      ...contd from last review

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox

Engine Performance: Certainly not a car for the enthusiast but has adequate power for city as well as highway driving.  For any change into a higher gear (say 1->2 or 3->4), one should ensure that the rpm stays above 1500 after the gear change. This would result in a spirited drive. Gear shifts below that rpm will lead to low pick up, but interestingly the car doesn’t stall even if you change gears such that the resultant rpm is below the idle rpm(~850rpm). It is uncomfortable but possible to drive the car in city in just the 2nd & 3rd gears alone with a speed range of 0-60kmph. For highways in India, going at speeds above 140 kmph is taking too much of risk even on excellent roads like the golden quadrilateral. Till that speed the Manza is very smooth and stable. Beyond that I haven’t tried yet. Vibrations are surprisingly low for a diesel engine, thanks to CRDI technology and are felt only at cold starts and die down as soon as the engine is warmed up.

Fuel Economy: I got 13.3 kmpl in city (Bangalore) with 20% AC before the first servicing with normal diesel and 14kmpl in city with 5% AC after the second service. All measurements are strictly tank-full-to-tank-full and with diesel filled at the same petrol pump and the filling dispenser set to automatically stop when it is tank-full (to get rid of different perceptions of tank-full by the person filling the diesel). These FE figures are for a faster than normal driving style but not a racing style. For highways, fuel efficiency was as low as 16kmpl without AC when I was cruising at 135-140kmph and was as high as 19kmpl without AC when I was driving at around 100kmph. So aerodynamic drag plays a major role. Same is the case with my cousin’s Swift Diesel where very high speeds lead to drastically lower FE……good motivation to stick to the speed limits J

Gearbox: Gears shifts are a little harder than the swift/dzire but precise. Trick is to shift the gears exactly as listed and not take any shortcuts. For instance, to go from 3rd to 2nd bring down the lever to neutral, push it to the left completely and only then bring it down again to 2nd gear. Any diagonal shift/shortcuts will lead to hard shifts. Ladies may still find the gears a little hard, but will easily get used to in a couple of weeks (based on feedback from wife and mom). Clutch is okay.

      Ride Quality & Handling

Ride Quality: Ride quality is very good for the front seat occupants and pampering for the rear seat occupants. I am very jealous of persons occupying the rear seats when I am driving the car. This car has the best back seat comfort this side of the Hyundai Sonata (~15+lakhs).  I sat in the Skoda Laura and rear seat comfort was still a mark below the Manza. Potholes are smoothened out and no body roll unless you are racing the car around corners.

Handling: Steering is so nice to use that you don’t really feel like you are driving a large car. But there are some minor steering corrections required on highways at speeds above 90kmph to keep the car in a straight line. Turning radius of 5.1m is pretty good compared to the huge dimensions of this car. Moreover, since the bonnet is small (aka Innova !), the car manages to turn in smaller spaces than one would imagine sitting in the driver’s seat. Most importantly, brakes are fantastic with the vehicle coming to a halt in a short distance without any side movement or rear losing ground contact. ABS is the icing on top.

Final Words Well, needless to say that we have a champion here. All major areas like comfort, safety, fuel efficiency and pricing have been covered very well. As stated previously, performance is adequate and the car is not meant for the racing types. But with more and more vehicles pouring on our roads, performance has really lost its significance. The car/bike to pull off first from a traffic light is also the first to stop at the next light!! If your budget is in the range of 6-13 lakhs and comfort, space and safety are the main reasons for buying a car, and you don’t get overtly upset about some minor issues with fit and finish, Manza is the best choice.

      Exterior

Colour  : Infinity Black (metallic Colour) maintained by my able driver babu. An aluminium number plate instead of plastic number plate as in the case of indigo cs. Door can be positioned and left free(do not need hold the door) to egress (real boon at my age of 53).

      Interior (Features, Space & Comfort)

Since the space is huge mosquito menace at night is more and a deo solves the problem. The lighting is excellent and was surprised to see an immobiliser. The blaupankt 2 din system is ok for my taste since i am not a great music lover and will be serviced by blaupankt service centre.

The seat belt Plastic cover came out of its seating and was promptly fixed by concorde. (why should it come out, Design Issue?) The airconditioner is very very good, In Chennai the heat is already taking its toll.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox

Diesel Engine Noise is low, and i have done 2400 Km in 40 days with a avg mileage of 16 KMPL (50% city and 50% highway). On Highway i have even exeprienced  23 KMPL on 5th gear. Smooth Gearbox. My wife having driven a Indica says the steering is a song and the size now does not offend her.

      Ride Quality & Handling

The shocks and suspension are par excellent. I have travelled on kutchha roads in the village, town, city lanes, and toll highways and believe me it is no problem.

      Purchase Experience

I bought it at concorde chennai with no freebies (except a cofee!!) and did the WURTH antirust at 3500/ and Teflon Coat (OPULENT) 2500/- , Seat Cover (3500/-) from jeewaji, Body Cover(900/- There are 3 grades went for the mid model and it is not water proof!!!) , Tubeless Tyre Plug kit (300/- lest on highways you are stuck)

      First Service

The first service is nothing great. it is known as Top-up, all oils reaching below the specified levels are filled up. The brake assembly was cleaned of all wear residiues.

      Accident

A Share Auto scraped the car at a signal and caused a rear body left dent, which was promptly repaired by Concorde ECR Cheannai (a Nice place) Rs 5000/- (Luckily under insurance that too within 6 months) hence just paid 830/- from my pocket.

      Final Words

Prudent buy. It meets all my fuctional requirements.

      Areas of improvement

Parking Sensor could have been provided. Antirust, a Good Teflon Coat and Tubeles Tyre Plug along with the tool kit. You are left to discover all the essentials. The acr manual is clumsy and is in black and white , is common for petrol and Diesel.  The sales team needs to be trained effectively to communicate the features and get it across the different age groups. There were so many features that the sales men across chennai would not even care to explain.

Could give a poster of manza to explain the features hidden in the car in a visual and not verbose ramayana ( take any japanese product they communicate everything through pictures)
Loose patience to read all the pages.

Was lucky enough to get a taste of this car....drove for about 20 kms. (in city) Decent gear box, responsive engine and tons of space. Returned an FE of 18.1 for the 20 kms that I logged...quite impressive for a petrol car of this size. Goes over the potholes fairly well, good braking action. Body work could have been better, same goes for interiors. 460 Lit. of boot is massive, boon for some.........problems for others. Instrument panel is bit small (personal view), prefer a come alive version. Overall very serious threat to D'zire, Fiesta, Aveo for sure. Tata Motors should refine it a bit and it is ready to take aspirational segment too. They also need to tighten up the support set-up at the grass root level. Take a test drive before you decide to buy. Good luck.Spacious cabin, Fuel Economy, Sensible pricingScope to improve interiors @ small incremental price, Tiny rear vier mirror, No alloys, Huge boot

Exterior Side looks are the best.Front looks resemble the Vista.Rear Looks is pretty ordinary.More or larger red lights required.Painting is good as it saidf to share the paint booth with Fiat Linea.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) It has got a host of useful features that enable  a safer drive such as ABS,blue tooth,8 wiper settings, abundant space, driver seat adjustment, lumbar support, set belt chime ,illuminated key hole ,Blaupunkt Music system with steering mounted controls,Fog lights and many more.

The rear seat is even better, good place to relax and stretch your legs (I'm 6'1" and needed a big car!).A/c is very effective and reaches th rear immediately.Comes with tubeless tyres.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox This review is posted by me after 2000 kms and one month of driving ...comprising 40% in village /rural roads  and 60% on 4 lane NH.Engine is silent, averaging 14 kmpl to date. This is very good mileage for a huge and heavy car.Gears are not the 'butter box' marutis though! Got to shift down 2 gears after speed breakers to regain rev and speed.Only here did I find the car engine sluggish.

Riderruality & Handling Ride is superb.Handles well in all roads.Excellent on 4 lane NH.Amazing drive and control.Good ground clearance.Spent the past 12 years in various models of Marutis. While marutis score in quality, reliability and fuel efficiency, off late they have started to fleece customers with expensive servicing/repair  costs. No rear space at all in any maruti (suits kids only).

Final Words Scanned the market for sub Rs.5.50 lakh vehicles :Dzire,Ikon Diesel,Sumo Victa,Rio,Bolero,Chevrolet,Logan and Manza.Needed to wait 4 months for a Dzire.Catch me waiting that long for a new car in 2010 AD! Holding costs of Ikon are high.Chevys are low mileage cars. Not willing to gamble with the Rio s as yet.Rio,Sumo,Bolero in my budget are withous power steerring and A/C. Did not go in for logan as it is not clear who will own it and service it 2 years from now.I'm told even taxi segmets dont buy the discounted and piled up logan these days.Got my choice of Dew white petrol manza in 5 days.Tatas have shown that this is all it costs to provide so many features if a car is made in India. The difference in costs in this segment could be mostly be royalty paid to Foreign car companies. Maybe the MANZA is the 'POOR MANS COROLLA'.

Areas of improvement Electricals, engine, door handles, more rear area of red lights required.

I had purchased a Tata Manza from Malik Cars, Hyderabad in December 2010. Since i had purchased a Vista earlier, i felt enough justice would have been done to Manza based on the smaller version. Paying for my mistake for the second time.

Took the deliver on the 3rd day of completing all the payment formalities. I drove the vehicle within the city for 3 days at a lower speed. Exactly after a week, i had decided to go on a long trip to another city along with family. The day when we started and hardly went 40km outside the city in the morning, the turbo charger failed and i had to abruptly halt my trip. I found that when the vehicle touches 100km on the odometer, the engine malfunction light lits up. Visited a TATA centre nearby, but the mechanics were helpless to identify the fault. Literally i had to cancel my trip and drive back to home. Later that day i took the vehicle to Malik Service Centre at Tollichowk. I never received a call till 3 days from the service people. As i was after them, i was told that the fault was untraceable till the end of third day. As i didnt want to upset my tour programme, i had to leave the city by flight along with my family on the second day itself. My family were so upset and they could see the dejected feeling in me and i could not say anything to anyone after thinking about the new vehicle lying in the workshop within a week of buying.

I received a call on the 4th day and i was told by a mechanic that the problem was rectified. The problem being a faulty electronic sensor which was replaced. I took the delivery of the vehicle after a week on my return back to the city. As usual the seats were stained with dirt and oil and atleast happy to see that there were no scratches on the body. Also i found that the vehicle was driven for more then 100km for test on my diesel which was filled up for the trip as mentioned earlier!

When the vehicle was at the service centre, i had called up the top heads of malik. The response was that they would say that they will get back in 5 mins and thats it! I asked the sales agent about how can a vehicle be delivered to the buyer without testing. As usual sorries and blames fly around. I got a habit to drive the car alone on long trips, but now i am thinking twice about doing that on my new vehicle. Ofcourse on slow speeds i dont find any problems but anyway I am still using my evergreen 4 yr old Maruthi Alto and i trust it lot more then any vehicle.

So my advice to readers, please dont fall for the looks of a vehicle while purchasing. Test it properly before buying, especially TATA vehicles, which are supposed to be the country's most UNreliable vehicles. Older indicas have good history while the new counterparts such as Vistas, Manzas and Nanos seem to have lost the clean slate.

Recently bought new Tata Manza. Look and Style is Good like big family sedan car except its broader back. The driver seat is though adjustable up & down but I, being 6 feet, often bump my head with the roof. Alighting off the car is again not comfortable since there is higher edge below the doors.  The rear seat is fairly low as compared to front seats. Uncomfortable to be used by old people. The rear seat passengers are unable to view properly outside through rear windows as the rear seat is quite low. Pickup is Good. Mileage Excellent, unmatchable with any available sedan. The best Feature is Fuel efficiency. Needs to improve in the seating of passengers as well as for drivers. The tata has not yet sent the gift of Rs. 1000.00 which I won during the December Ultimate Offer. Still waiting. Wonderful to own with lot of loaded features in this price but the experience to buy Tata Manza from Lucknow dealer, Motorsales was not at all happy & satisfying. Hope they will improve the customer relation in future.

Exterior Extremely neutral category sedan. Design is at par with C class Sedan. Very stylish headlamp design. No messed up ergonomics here - one of the rare in Tata's product.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Boot space is one of the best (if not the gest) in its class. Very much comfortable and equipped with adv features like Bluetooth, Aux input, Pendrive, Earphones. Driver Information System gives you real time Temp, Instantaneous mileage, Average mileage, Distance to empty (to Pump) and the clock. Leg space is outstanding for both front and rear passengers. Driver seat is height adjustable as well. Power windows on all the doors for Aura version. Precise Headlight adjustment by stepper motor control.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Manza amazed me with a Fuel economy of 21.5 KM/l on highways and 19 - 19.5 KM/l in city limits that too with 40% AC. Quadrajet Diesel Engine is really silent and is very much efficient. The insulation from engine sound is so good that for RPM below 4000RPM, passengers can't tell if there is indeed a diesel under the hood. Gear knob is wrapped in leather and is of high quality.

Ride Quality & Handling Extremely comfortable during highways and expressways. Reaches 140 KM/h effortlessly with no noise or vibration. The handling is fairly reasonable and is way improved over any other Tata variants yet.

Final Words A very good and neutral sedan. Good ground clearance of 165 mm. Fuel tank capacity is 44ltrs which is quite sufficient. Airbags + ABS available and collapsible Steering column is present in top end model. Steering mounted music control adds to comfort and convenience too. 12V socket for rear passengers for Laptop charging, Vanity mirror on left Sun vizor has lights on either sides of it. Very competetive in pricing. Really a Value For Money Neutral Sedan.

Areas of improvement Air Conditioner Vent for rear passenger should have been great. The quality of rubber cover for headphone and pen drive is another thumbs down. Audio system has average sound quality.

Very comfortable long journey ride, extremely fuel-efficient, low noise Quadrajet diesel engineRear AC vent not there for rear passengers, Five rupees rubber cover for headphone and pen drive

      Hi all

I took the delivery of my Manza Quadrajet Aura ABS yesterday. Booked on last 12th Dec 09. The vehicle was delivered on 28th Dec 09. I am really excited to drive this power horse!

I already own a spark LT which has run 30,000 kms in 2 years 3 months. Now I wanted to go for a diesel one which has all features...I had been waiting for a good launch since the beginning of 2009. I had these cars in my mind before zeroed in Manza

      1. Ikon TDCI (Has good build quality, good engine, but decade old look!!!, no features!!!)

      2. Fiesta TDci (Good engine, good mileage, poor ground clearance, build quality is not so good)

      3. Logan (Very good vehicle in all aspects. Lacks in look and features)

      4. Xylo (Good for big family...my wife and daughter felt that it seems like sitting in an omni bus inside Xylo...so not so impressive for me)

I dint have any inclination to Maruti (DeZire) products as they dont value the back seat passengers. All are cramped interiors (including SX4). They un necessarily creat artificial demands on cars like Swift and DeZire.

I have good faith on Linea...but the price tag for the same features as in Manza is too much. I have to pay nearly 2 to 2.5 lakhs more for the same featured Linea. Moreoever the sholder height and head room of the rear seat is so horrible in Linea.

As you can guess, for every new launch the other one was removed from the list. I was about to book Xylo in last Oct 09. By that time the launch news of Manza came and I waited for it.

After the launch, I took the test drive of Manza extensively. On all types of terrains. City, Highways, etc.

You wont believe, it has satisfied all my expectations. I drove upto 120 kmph and applied break (in ABS version)...it just came to halt without any trouble. While applying break I took my hands off from steering to check it. This was the reason why I wanted ABS for me.

The dealer GEM motors from Coimbatore assured the delivery before 31st Dec 09. The executive who followed up me was prompt in service and had good time till I took the delivery. Since there were so many deliveries yesterday, they didn't have time to clean the dirts (little) on few corners of the dash board. Anyways...after first service I am planning to set everything right.

To my surprise all the Manzas delivered (I could check only those...) shown 5 kmpl as average fuel economy. When asked the mechanic said it is the initial set up done in the factory. Now (after some 30 kms run) it shows 9.1 kmpl. I guess it will shoot up to  16 to 18 in couple of days. However, the instant mileage shows upto 25 kmpl (WOW..if its average)

From this week end I will be driving my dream machine on long drives. Let me update the review once every few thousand kilometers.

      Exterior

Superb look. Stylish front, Cat-eye finish

      Interior (Features, Space & Comfort)

Mind blowing space, features and extreme comfort (heard that Benchmark is Benz S-class )

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox

Silent engine, just zooms when the turbo kicks, gear ratios are good, yet to get the correct fuel economy. Guess it should be anything above 17 kmpl

      Ride Quality & Handling

Cornering is really good. Could handle just like a small car. I have spark. So I am able to compare.

      Final Words

If you have plans to go for any diesel sedan, dont hesitate! Go for Manza! you wont regret.

      Areas of improvement

The dual tone interiors are prone to dirt. The finger impressions will easily be visible. This color can be changed to something else (as in Xylo)

Space, Fuel Economy, Reliable service networkI guess nothing

      Exterior:

In par with a imported car, body line and overall finish is good. Strong body, profile of the autobody makes the car strong. Complex design well handled and delivered. Welding of sheet metal components are quite good, and dont have the conventional TATA car in mind, since this product is manufactured in FIAT plant, and engineers do the same job of Linea in Manza. Nomenclature of the car body is similar to TOYOTO Coralla, or a A segment car. No doubt. Painting is quite good, suggest to go for a 3M scratch and strain guard polish to add more glamour. Overall a wonderful improvement by TATA.

      Interior:

The interiors are in-complete without proper or say a decent mats. Tata could have charged 1 K more and given a good mat. I dont know how a CHEAP map was put inside the car, mats are not flowing with the car floor, warps, and looks odd for the car, Better use a multi purpose synthetic mat inside, you get in several car interior shops, cost Rs 600, but overall improves the looks of the car. Also when you carefully notice from inside, the plastic components colour is not uniform inside the vechile. I am not happy with the rubber beedings used inside the car, oer the front windsheild not aligning with the plastic railing from dash to roof, inside.

      Features:

+ Decent music system, has two speakers in Dash, 2 speaker in front doors, and 2 in rear. caution, no speaker in rear door, but there is a provision for 2 more speaker. default music system plays MP3, and all most of the music formats, (-) not scalable for DVD. USB cannot plan hard disk. + Plays up to 4 GM memory stick. + Sound quaity is good. + Blue tooth is a wonderful feature you will appreciate when driving in traffic.

      Space:

Excellent, no other car is this good. See to believe. Rear seats are also great, feel like a king or a royal when you travel on long distance. +++ for seating and leg room. I am above 6'3" and can easily get in, get out and seat comfortabally. Best Seating than Benz or BMW. But the fabric looks can be improved like Hyundai. Top fabric is not great, looks cheap.

Overall the interios can be made classy, which will attract more customers.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox:

I have a Diesel engine, super quite, transition from 1000 to 4000 RPM with ease, thanks to TATA for bringing such a great technology. People say this is FIAT engine, and similar to Dzire, or SWIFT, but there is some seceret formula TATA use in MANZA or Linea. This power plant is a world class for its capacity, and pick up is excellent. Super quite engine, loads of power. I have driven with 5 adults at a speed of 160 Kms, you will not believe the Speedometer works like a RPM on high ways, i mean the transition from 60 to 100 happens in few seconds, easily overtake all cars on road with confidence, ABS is excellent in cornoring. No skid or bad shakes etc.

Milage: Get around 650 Kms with 40 L of diesel. Inside city i get 15.3 Kms on High way i get more than 18kms, with 5 adults, speed of 100 to 160 kms, Medium A/c, partly driven in nights. So if you drive at decent speed, you can expect 19 kms. Gear box is a sweet heart, such smooth

      Ride Quality & Handling:

Excellent on high way as well as city use. When climbing on a speed breaker, and getting down from speed breaker, you feel you ride a small car or like Indica, that feel is not changed for this product. When climbing down from a speed breaker, i hear friction kind of noice from front struts. Platform is high, so never hits small objects on ground, can ride over a manhole cover projected high with confidence even with load. Steering is plastic, and feel is not good, go for a simple thin and soft steering cover to get a good feel, tiltable steering, good on high ways. Handle with authority in hills. If you have tight steering, you can adjust them in TATA outlet, hope they use a ECU based control unit to change steering tightness. Ride is superb on high way as well inside city. When you own it, you dont feel bad that your investment is made on a right product, this car is always better than FORD Fiesta, Skoda Fabia, Laura when comes to comfort and price.

      Final Words:

You will not feel bad when you own a TATA MANZA AURA ABS.(Diesel)

Far better than other cars, I tried so many cars for few months before i settled with MANZA.

If you see this car in detail, you will sure go for MANZA, but have a open mind to repace floor mats, and do few value adds on cosmetic front, this car will look great and turn heads of people. A car for a young and old person, Feel of the car, engine is great. Buy, ride to feel it.

Be aware of choosing TATA MOTORS service personal, I dont doubt their skills, but this car is a next generation product for most of the car mechanics, and some times they will not be able to get back the feel of the real car. I believe the current generation mechanics depend more on equipments, instruments than their senses. Hope TATA will look into it.

BE AWARE THAT TATA POST DELIVERY CHECK IS NOT CORRECT. MAKE SURE THAT YOU SPEND AN HOUR TO ENSURE THE FEATURES, AND SYSTEM WORKS AS MENTIONED IN THE VECHILE PDI CHECK LIST. SINCE I HAD ISSUES WITH ABS LIGHT, REAR TAIL LAMP NOT WORKING, SPEEDOMETER NOT WORKING. It is our responsibility to make sure we check the vechile before taking delivery.

      Areas of improvement:

Interiors, PDI check, Quality of Service and maintain quality since Jan 2010. Do continue to use the LINEA engine,

Exterior Hi I am Capt Sanjay Joshi. I moved from Maruti Wagon R to Manza. I got my Manza Aura BS4 on 28 April 10. I have driven more than 7000 kms, trvelling from Ahmedabad to Nasik, Pune and Mount Abu. Manza has Very elegant, powerful and commanding looks. Larger wheels and higher roof makes it  tall man's sedan. The colour and paints are very nice.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) The space is awsome. Very comfortable front seats and Superb Rear Seat with fantastic Leg and Head room. Much better than Honda City! (Yes sit in both to belive),Ford Fiesta and Dezire and SX4 too. The Hand rest gives a Maharaja feel. Many of my Excutive friends have also felt very nice in rear seat. The Music System with Blue tooth facility lets you attend to phone calls (Avoid as traffic rule). Three seat bels in rear makes it a safe vehicle. The boot space is awesome in capital.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox The silence of running engine is very noticale (I have cranked a running engins at signal , assuming it to be shut) The running is very good with 90 BHP, but the power was felt during the climbs of mount Abu . The car moved very comfortably in 4th gear and the Turning was hasselfree and very smooth. i have got an average of 15.88 kpl on highway with primium petrol and with all AC. The gear shift is very smooth and moves in both directions smoothly. Brakes are good and smooth. The space between the accelator and the brake is less compared to my earler Wagon R.

Ride Quality & Handling The ride quality is smooth and the suspension is also very good. The power steering is very smooth and manoovering is very easy even for my wife, who has driven long distance on this vehicle with me.

Final Words People will start beliving in Tata product. Best value for money and true comforts of driving.

Areas of improvement Some items like light and wiper switches are having some teething problems, but replaced by Tata.

GOOD ENGINE POWER, GREAT FUEL ECONOMY, BEYOND DOUBT THE BEST REAR SEAT IN ALL SEDANS UPTO 10 LACNOT MANY, SPACE BETWEEN ACCELATOR AND BRAKE
