I had been driving a Honda City for 5 years, and a Baleno before that for 4 years. When it came to buying my own car, I knew exactly what I wanted. The car should have good rear room. It ought to be very comfortable for people sitting at the back. And I didn’t want to spend a fortune.

So I did my due diligence, mostly at the CarWale site. When I entered the parameters above, I found a ready recommendation: Tata Indigo XL. I couldn’t believe my eyes. What? The humble Indigo defeated all the famous Japanese brands? I went through the specs of the car, and was quite pleasantly surprised. With a twin AC, a huge amount of rear space, McPherson strut suspension on all wheels, a city average of 12 kmpl, the car didn’t sound bad at all. Based on CarWale’s recommendation and my own study, I ordered the car, Classic Petrol version. The car was delivered on the Valentine’s Day, and I took home the long Burgundy Royal gift for my wife.

So far I have driven 2300km, so I can make some remarks. First, if you are used to the Japanese smoothness that you cannot compromise, this car will take time getting comfortable with. It feels heavy. The steering is hydraulic, not EPS, so again some effort there. When turning, you don’t get the same lightness experienced in the City or Baleno. The pickup is sufficient, but not all that swift like the City. So, it is not a car to race with. If you want to get to your destination comfortably, if you do not suffer from the habit of cursing at people zipping past when the traffic light turns green, if you prefer accelerating at the quiet majesty of a king, and not rushing with the impetuous haste of a headstrong prince, then you will enjoy this car.

The engine is a tad noisy at the lower gears, maybe because its still new, but is absolutely noiseless at 4th and 5th gears. Engine noise reduction is excellent. Gear shift is quite smooth, although usually Indica and Indigo have poor ratings on the shift. The suspensions are really good, and you do not feel the bumps on the road. I found the same passengers who complained against my 2007 Honda City, sleeping merrily through the entire ride, passing through some of the rough stretches of East Delhi and Ghaziabad. The car feels rock solid at high speeds, so feel free to explore the highways.

The turning radius of 5.5m against the 4.9m of the City will be very well felt when you try to park in a parking lot. Add to that the length of the car, and you better watch out lest you hit the car by the side! But with some practice, all that can be left behind for the otherwise unbeatable experience.

The XL has a lot of length inside. Initially, I could not hear people sitting at the back, and they too would have to lean forward and shout a little to make themselves properly audible. Welcome to India’s only stretch limousine! The legspace at the back is really royal, so the distance between the driver and the rear passenger gives the passenger (or the driver), a royal privacy. However, the driver side legspace could have been made a little better, although it is nothing to be complained about. It is good that the seat height is adjustable, compensating for the little lack of horizontal space.

There are two ACs in the car, and they both cool quite efficiently. It is marvelous that if the front passengers do not like the cold air, the rear passengers need not have to compromise, and can switch on the rear AC for themselves. I found the dual cooling, well, quite cool (pun intended!)

The engineering finish inside can be improved. Plastic cutouts are not perfect, so you can see uneven gaps between parts. The boot is really poorly done, with the cloth covering being uneven like a rocky mountain. The wooden finish on the steering is refreshing, and specially comfortable for the hands while turning the car.

The car sports a more modern look compared to the standard Indigo, mostly because of the tail lights. From the back, it has a saloon like look.

I have been getting 12 kmpl consistently in hardcore city driving, using Speed from Bharat Petroleum.

The car should have come with an MP3 player. The other grudge is that Tata Motors didn't give a lumbar rest, despite advertising. Later they told me that its a printing mistake in the brochure!

Overall, a value-for-money performer from Tata!

Very spacious, Great coolingBetter finish required

I wanted to upgrade to a good sedan within six lakh budjet last year. I carried out a detail survey for six months with test drive of Hyundai Verna, Ford Fiesta, Maruti SX4, Honda City, Aveo etc with full involvement of my wife & two kids of 12 & 10 yrs. Finally we selected Indigo XL classic petrol which was to be launched shortly & delivered to me in Aug 2008. Incidently this was the only car liked & prefered by all the four in our family without any reservation. Mine was the first Indigo XL classic sold in Allahabad district. Now even after more than a year we are very happy that we took a right decision. It is an excellent car with very high comfort level, Huge boot & leg/shoulder/body space, good driving pleasure, excellent electronic systems, a good network & after sales service, real value for money and above all a true Indian Car. Be sure ladies & kids will always prefer this car over all other sedan in this segments. No doubt the likes of HONDAS have to do some thing to survive in long run. Long live TATAs

very High comfort level, huge boot/leg/body space, value for money & good after sale/sevice networklacks in fuel economy, could have been little more styilish

A good machine which has a lot of space forhers the people sitting inside.Very comfortable back seats.Pickup has been excellent with the new DICOR engine. Hardly hear any engine sound inside the cabin.Long distance drives have been very good.

Gives me a mileage of 14Km/litre in City (Bangalore).I did a lot of research on the cars of this segment namely Maruti Dzire,Logan,Ford Fiesta TDCI but Indigo XL is far superior in many respects that the others. Definetly worth owing one than many of the premium cars. Also spares are cheap when compared to the others.

A great machine developed by TATA's. Not been marketed properly is what i feel. There are too many variants in Indigo that have been launced and thats one reason why this awesome machine has lost out in its unique identity.

Excellent Mileage,Very Comfortable,Decent Pickup,Cool FeaturesThe quality of the plastics and interiors can be refined

I do not own this car but have taken  test drive of both diesel and petrol version. Great interiors, good rear seat space and very comfortable. Diesel version lacks power. Not a very comfortable car to drive. one can buy this car provided he employs a driver. Petrol version with 101 bhp is better than the diesel version but i doubt whether this can give 12+ mileage.Excellent features but expensive, could have been Rs 75,000 lesser.

FULLY LOADED GOOD INTERIORS EXCELLENT LOOKVERY EXPENSIVE, NOT SURE WITH ITS MILEAGE

This is a nice car for 8.5 lac Rupees. I have purchased this car in Feb'07 just after a month of its launch. Drove down from Jamshedpur to Bangalore without any problems and jerks. The sad part is EXTREMELY BAD service by Concord Motors of bangalore. They do not have trained mechanic to handle cars like this. I took my car for its first service and got my fingure burnt. I thank Manipal Motos and Telco Pune for saving this NICE car.

Both the ACs, wireless phone, chill trey etc work excellent. The rear side is very spacious.

I have dicor and it gives about 12 Km in bangalore. So good.No cons here, very comfortable. I own a BMW too and know about comfort specially for this price ~8.5

Its a great car to buy especially with its new Dicor engine which is considerably refined to its older counter-part. Tata has provided a lot of features with it, a lot really means a lot, some you won't even get in the D+ segment cars. It has a very long wheel base, this car has actually been stretched to give a lot of space in it, extension over the ordinary one is 200mm, this is good but it really makes the car look odd, even 100mm extra would have done the job and rest of the 100 mm should have been  increased in equal propotions from the front and the boot to give it a good sedan look. The rear door is very big and moreover they are advertising it as a chaffeur driven car and also provided a lots of features for rear passengers like separate AC vents, TFT screens, charging point and foldable trays at back of the front seats etc. At  around 7.50 lakhs for the diesel, it is a good car but lacks the good car feel and definately not as powerful and refined as the Verna & Fiesta respectively, but still one can buy it for the unlimited luxury features it comes with.Long wheel base, Dicor engineOnly the wheelbase is long

Finally, we have a sedan with all the luxury which can be afforded by middle class. The looks are great. It's very different from the earlier versions of indigo. The 200mm extra wheelbase provides a lot of leg room inside. The rear AC vents, chiller box, cup holders, 6-way adjustable seats give this car feel of merc. There's ample of boot space.

Talking about engine, tata's are now using DICOR engine which is much refined than the earlier versions and TDi engine. Power is 70bhp which is slightly more than logan (66bhp) and less than swift (75bhp). Though the engine makes slightly more noise than its competitors, it's not too much that one can not bear it. The mileage is arnd 12.3 overall compared to 15+ given by the cars like logan and swift.

If you're looking for sedan car, this is the best choice as far as my opinion goes, the other cars available in this segment are higher in cost and do not afford the luxury provided by this car. Logan is almost in the same range as this car. So I would give a brief comparision between these two cars

Logan 1.5 dci DLS has better engine but uses only 8 valves compared to 16 valves in indigo XL, engine noise is lower, less legroom (though the legroom is enough, i'm only comparing it with indigo XL), boxy looks from behind, interiors are bad compared to XL, the buttons are all over place, only one indicator for both left and right turn which can create confusion sometimes, In mumbai they've got service centres at only kurla and ray road whereas tata has got service centres at many places. Cost of XL is arnd 25000 less than that of logan

So in all, if you're looking for a car with luxury and ready to compromise little on engine part, than this is the car

Good Style, Excellent exteriors and interiors, Very spacious, boot space also very largeFuel Economy, slightly greater noise of engine compared to other diesels

I had been driving a Indigo XL Classic for 3 weeks as of now and the car has got good rear room space. It ought to be very comfortable for people sitting at the back. Its really eXclusive Lounge. but they should improve on the exteriors. And the door design need to be improved a lot. AC in the car is working pefectly and you can feel the cool quiet effectively. But lack of ABS and airbags. It is more executive looking car. coming to the mileage, I have been getting 12 kmpl consistently in city driving. Overall, a value-for-money.Comfort and great rear boot spaceNeed to improve the exterior

Exterior Paint quality is very poor and tend to fade. Frequently antena refused to work. Poor quality plastics has been used in front and rear crash guards, front fog lamp bazels tend to fell down from their clips while  on motion, has to replace the set even though a single is lost.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Very very poor quality  plastics were  used on dash board. Tata should feel ashamed to call this car a lemo. Three link rear suspensions are good.  I think tata has used the same shocks in the rear and front as in the old indigos, though this car is a 200mm longer comparing to their predicessors, therefore due to the excessive swing suspensions and shocks tend to worn out very fast. Rear leg room is un beatable in this class.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox One should write an encyclopedia about the Dicor engine which was developed by irresponsible tata engineers to compete the ford fiestas way back in 2006.  Some times even service personnals at their authorized service centres are failed to detuct the cause of a particular problem,  hats off tata.  I will challange mr. ratan tata, if he keeps this car for a year without raising his BP to dangerous levels, then i will publicly appologize him. Mr ratan tata is dreaming big about his cars, and keeping in mind his entho and the reputation of his company people in this country buying his cars, but the poor customers are taken for a ride by his engineers and top brasses. Tata is literally deserve to be called 'THE GREAT TAXI WALLA OF INDIA'.

Ride Quality & Handling Ride quality and handling is above average.

Final Words Mr ratan tata before vacating his seat has to advice his successor at least he should spare indian car buyers by not giving false promises on the basis of the reputation of his company, and to  seriously clear the image of TAXI WALLA.

Areas of improvement It is high time to discontinue the use of Dicor motors compleately, and not to cheat innocent buyers by just changing the logo as CR4.

i like only and only fuel economy, somewhat styling, rear leg room, and rear a/c.Cheap plastics used one should wonder how it is fit to be called a LEMO!
