I was looking for an SUV within 10 Laks range, took test drive on Bolero, Scorpio mHawk, Scorpio CRDe n Tata Safari and finally on Sumo Grande n decided to go ahead with Sumo Grande.

I think Tata's marketing geeks are useless like anything, otherwise how dare they gave the 'Sumo' tag to such a good looking vechicle.

'Grande Black' is looking gr8, has got all the looks for an SUV, vechicle is a solid stuff, n whn u ride it u will feel u r ruling the road.

Its very spacious, clutch is smooth, but gears r not that smooth which is the normal behaviour in Indian SUV's, smooth even in uneven roads, breaks r pretty good, AC is good, uniform distribution in all the 3 rows, the roof mounted AC vents can be adjusted 360 degrees in any direction, very easy to handle, turning radius is very less, interiors are good for the money we pay, good music system, interiors are sound proof, engine sounds gr8, doors are of good quality.

Some issues i have noticed are Grills are made of cheap looking plastics, as they have taken care the rest all parts they have taken care this too. The rear suspension is same as sumo's rear suspension which is parabolic plates.

But as a whole vechile is far far better than Scorpio mHawk Vix which is the top end in that class(Such a crap vechile i haven't seen, not even driver can sit properly, i think 3rd is meant for kids, bcz only kids can enter into that, being bigger in size than Grande it shuld be more spacious, AC is not at all good, Split AC vents are made of cheap plastic, n i think tht is fixed for just a show bcz it is useless.bumby ride in uneven roads n for all these crap features they charge you 11.5 laks.)

Good Style, Good comfort, Good Fule Economy, Very spacious even in the 3rd row, AC is okSumo tag, Engine is bit sluggish, Gear is not that smooth, Cheap plastic looking Grills

i bought this (tata sumo grande tcic ) huge car 2 months (5000km) before ,and its the right time to wright a review about this muv ,

this car powered with old safari engine of 90ps power which is good enough for those who drive decently,it cannot compete with safari dicor or scorpio mhawk or xylo meagle because it dosnt have common rail fuel injection but on highway it makes an average speed of 120km/hr with out any extra noise and handling is realy good at this speed

the best part of this car is power steering which dosnt make you feel like you are steering a big car, handling in the city very very good compared to this size car, engine is very smooth makes no noise at all

during my 5000km experince on this car ihave gone to all kind of terrain and i feel very comportable, mileage average is 10 to 12km /liter, this car is good for a family with grand pas& grand mas, truely its a value for money i bought this for 6.4laks on road madurai.which is much much cheaper than xylos, dicors, innovas

ihad a problem of wheel alingment after 1500km which was very well taken care of my dealer and after that there was no problem till now

the only thing negative which i feel about this car is turbolag at lower engine speed because it dosnt have variable geometry turbo charger which dicors and meagles, mhawks have

last , the best part of this car is the availability of spares and cost of spares are very very less compared to dicors and meagles ,mhawks

spacious, good fuel economy, handling very good in city aswell as in highspeed, city ride exellentpoor interior finish, engine pick up is low since turbo lag

i bought this vehicle from joshi auto zone chandigarh. was promised moon didnt get anything except problems. guys dont trust joshi auto zone and tata motors- thats my personal view out of experiances.

i was handed over dirty vehicle. met with an accident and made  a mistake of going back to joshi auto zone. can u believe it- took two months and police assistance to get vehicle back.

any roadside mechanic would have done a better job- atleast would not have been cheated.

if tata can give u vehicle for free and lookafter the after sales expenditure and problems honestly then u can think of taking risk- still think 100 times before going to joshi auto zone.

poor overall vehicle, poor after sales, worst dearlers to deal with

I'd been wanting to buy an affordable SUV(comparable cost to a mid sized city car)for the occassional weekend highway drive. Safari's interiors for its price are not too good.Even though the new engine drew me for a test drive, the rubber beadings on the doors and the general finish made me go against it.

Mahindra Scorpio, I personally know 3 people who've experienced a brake failure on a highway .That wasn't even an option..so there was little choice.

Out came this Sumo Grande. I looked at the feature list and then at the tag. The Sumo tag wants you to not see it, but the features draw you to the showroom. External looks are impressive, barring the front grill. Drive is good too. When you stop and look around on the inside, you feel the car lacking some thing. Namely the dashboard could've been better and the plastics used on the interiors could've done with some better selection too. Wood look alike doesn't go well with the overall interiors. The quality of fixtures there is lacking.

Still comparing all the other features, it is value and I've gone ahead to book the silver color which I still have to see.

I hope that later on in accessories they come out with better looking dash board, the front grill and the interior plastics.

And Tata people in reading please rebrand the vehicle and get it away from the Sumo Tag and the taxi image that it has created. Half the people I spoke to don't even want to consider a test drive just because it is a Sumo and the image attached to it !!

To all the people who still like to drive themselves and find it better to be seated in a tall vehicle, it is a good vehicle for its price.(if you can discount the interior looks for the features that it carry.)

      Happy motoring !!

Good Style, responsive engine, good pick up and brakingSumo name tag, tacky looking plastic interiors, dashboard could've been better

opted sumo grande gx against safari for its new LOOKS. and yes it's EYE CATCHING in its sunset orange color. keeping in view the price tag i have no complaints for exterior styling. all thums up when a family in brand new 'mahindra xylo' poured their eyes on my orange bull. for me grande surpasses xylo in every inch. for some xylos dashboard assembly may be good looking but to me it seemed to be bit tacky and untidy compared to the sober beige color of mine. INSIDE the car is a good comfortable space for 7 with roof top ac for 3rd row too which seems to be strong enough to the last row. front seats with LUMBAR SUPPORT not much of use. ADJUSTABLE HEIGHT driver seat is good for a short person to raise and have a better view in near front of car. HEIGHT ADJUSTABLE SEAT BELTS. 2ND ROW SEATS with centre folding armrest, reclining, tilting and foldable. 3RD ROW folding, removable most spacious in its class (innova, scorpio and safari). Remove third row seats, fold and tilt the second row what you miss is soft 6x4 mattress to lie down on such a huge space you find in the rear. GEAR shifting fine or say good for such price car as i have not paid 7 figured price for it. and no complaints for when i know i am buying tata car. DRIVING with power steering (EPS missing) wants you to hold the steering firmly on the turns (more firmly if you are driving in hills as i do). Na! not with your pinky only as maruti swift DDIS engine or other small cars with electronic power steering allows you to do. dont forget you are driving tata and not toyota (even toyota fortuner high priced car has a shaky gear lever). Done more than 17000 thousand after 14 october 2008. average of 1600 kms permonth which involved driving on unmetalled roads, single lanes, highways of Himachal, chandigarh, GT road was quite satisfying for the overall average 13.0 kmpl which involves mostly hill driving. For a tour to delhi 750 kms average obtained 14.5 kmpl with 300 kms of AC ON. thats why 5 stars for TATA car in this class. (where scorpio runs around 10/11 and safari around 10, not to compare with 5000cc landrover discovery giving much under 10kmpl since no match) SPEEDing upto 110 kmph is quite smooth, 120 still smooth, 125 never throttled above it since always driving with family. to my accord 140 may be the max speed to go on without daring to check its limits. two days ago drove the car in the village of punjab and knew the car is just a beast for villages of plain areas. clearing everything under it on the underconstruction roads whether it be sewerage, a pitch or a pothole. small turning circle allows to maneuver the car easily on 90 degree tight turns and curves, very satisfying to know the driveability of car. Ah! how could i forget to mention that the biggest drawback this car comes with is the lack of ABS. beware of your speed and the number of cars you are cruising among on the highway, since its TYRES GET LOCKED when brake pedal is pushed with hard jerk, thus giving you zero control and maneuverability. this may be another reason for not driving it at very high speeds. TYRE wearing is more in hill region for the difference of terrain and curved roads. need to keep regular check on wheel alignment a slight screeching sound i park it in the alignment station. purchased car from dealer in himachal. very dissatisfying wheel alignment 1st 4000 kms and my front tyres totally worn from the sides and JP MOTORS to be blamed for that. opted for alignment not to be done at dealer. MAINTENANCE : dont forget to buy extended warranty when you buy this car. it will save a lot on your pocket when you buy any indian car. you never know what will go wrong atlast you are driving a pieces of metal and machines joined together shaped to car. presently spent only on alignment, oil change and 1900 on a broken windshield free insurance, a single bridgestone tyre 5950 rupees all credits to JP Motors, Solan for disgusting wheel alignment replacing the tyre with tread of about 4mm still on the half left. fuel expenses come appurtenent to the vehicle ha!ha! much of maintenance depends on your driving style and skill. since driver and owner are the persons responsible for the way the vehicle is driven and kept. a wrong gear change and clutch pressing results in a broken pressure or clutch plates or may be serious and for that the car and its manufacturer is not to be blamed.looks, price, passenger comfortrear suspension, weight and power mismatch

First of all service after sale is very poor, the vehicle is not upto the standard compared to other vehicles of Tata. I got the engine overhouling  before 85thousand kilometers, eventhough all the service are done from the autherised dealer KVR at Kannur. I never get my vehicle on time after service or without problem. They never do the work properly. After the settlement of all the bill and checking the vehicle only they tell some parts are to be replaced to run it properly where as they confirmed everything is done and ready for taking the delivery. The headlight with water is reported when we went for the 30thousand kilometers, and repeatedly requested to change it, always the answer is the parts not available, after 50 thousand kilometers they told the warranty expired so cannot change it even it is report long time back. We should have get a written letter from General manager at the time of reporting itslef, where as we dont have as we belive them and waiting for their call after the supply arrive. Even the LCD & seat covers was with full of black  oil after the service.

Interior look, looks good, but performance & service badService ,Engine, milage, maintanence

Test drove the sumo grande as well as the safari, actually found the grande more comforatble to drive than the safari, specially the turning radius, had to reverse safari on a U turn which grande cleared in one go. The overall drive was very smooth and powerful. The control was similar to that of a small car, no discomfort of driving a huge thing on the crowded city roads. Plan to buy one soon to fulfill my dream of owning a mid segment SUV.Great Looks, value for moneycheap plastic interiors

Exterior To be honest I just love the looks of the old sumo. And was just shocked when I first saw the grande. But after 2 years, now I feel grande looks good. Designers at TATA have done a good job. It does look like the Sumo from every angle but still so modern.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) When you step in though, its like a time vault. Nothing has changed other than colour. I just dont understand why TATA use bit and pieces in their dash rather than one piece dash. One piece dash will solve the problem of inconsistent fit and finish. Mateirials used are hard wearing, which suits my taste. So no complains there. One thing you will love is the level of comfort. Seats are super comfortable. And middle row captain seats are just superb. The last row though is a bit flat but managable. Leg room at the last row is just sufficient. Have to mention one thing, the cabin is well insulated.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Start the engine and what???? no vibration???? Looks like TATA engineers are working over time. You release the clutch and let the torque do the job for you, You dont need to press the throttle. Gear shifts could have been better. But over all the performance seemed adequate. Car sprints well and can do a constant 100kph.

Ride Quality & Handlings Low speed ride is good. Soaks up the bumps well, so non leaf springish. There is a bit of up and down movement during high speed cruising but nothing to be scared of. Handling is good if you are sedate. But your agressive inputs will throw the car off balance. Braking is good, compared to the earlier grande, but there is that typical sumo nose dive ( which I like but can be scarey for the passengers).

Final Words I just dont understand why most people dont considor a grande while buying a muv. Its worth a look. It looks, rides and cruises better than a xylo or a bolero. I did a short test drive (20-25kms). And decided I'll buy one. Went ahead and booked one in walnut gold.

Areas of improvement Should be intierior fit and finish. May be the use of one piece dash board can solve it. One thing I would want TATA to retain in future sumo line ups is the unpolished nature of it. I like the rough nature of it.

I brought SumoGrande on 12th Dec 08. Same vehicle my bro and driver rejected 4 months back. I wanted to buy mHawk Scorpio but when I went for Grande Trial, I was seating on 3rd row, which is what made me choose this vehicle. Ride track was bumpy and when I was secured with safety belt, I rather enjoyed that bumpy ride.

I work abroad and driven Mercedes, BMW, Pajero and Honda. In India, my home town Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, has bumpy roads around. This vehicle is indeed good to go to my farms, town with full load. I use this vehicle to carry my farm produce too.

The name "Sumo" tag does not matter as vehicle perform well. Some cheap plastic inside hardly bothered me. (My 8 yrs old son thought about it and made wiered comment whether this car is from China..... ) Nevertheless, I drove this vehicle almost 1500 km in one week. First servicing cost me Rs 1500.00 and now next due is after 15000 km.

When I brought this vehicle - I did not read any reviews and was total blind. Today i feel proud owner of Grande cause it serves me well. Every vehicle in the world has plus and minus. I installed rear view camera for reverse, added additional front and rear guards. That is all i had to do as Grande came fully loaded.

Gear shift is still problem but it was there in Scorpio as well (which I still own). I made my self adjusted to the system Grande has. Now my hands perfectly shift gears, and other controls.

What I suggest is install rear view camera for Grande, as it gives clear idea you dont bump others behind, as you hardly see anything behind. Otherwise vehicle is real good and worth for buying.

I brought this vehicle from Hundekari Auto from Ahmednagar, the best service provider, after sale. They hinted me not to install Mac wheel as thickness of tubeless tyres are enough to take jerks.

Just last words, don’t forget to use safety belts whatever vehicle you buy as it saves life and make your journey comfortable.

I will keep posting as i drive Grande for longer time giving you feedback about performance

Good style, sturdy, easy to drive, tubeless tyres, spacious 3rd row seats, cheap plastic inside,

well i bought a sumo grande gx about 9 months ago and was happy about the price and the performance of the car but as after the  first service at 15000 km it gave me more reason to smile cause its givin a effeciency of 13-14 km in delhi and as you know how good is the traffic out here in delhi ,more over the car doesn't have any turbo lag and i pull off engine from 1100-1200 rpm without any vibration thanks for the new 2.2 from tata though the biggest problem is the low mounted intercoller which hits each and every stone if u ridding on rough /off roads .but as the suv all ready coverd 27000 km the average in city remains at 12 with a/c and 13.5 without a/c ,well i think people who wanna ride safe and have good effeciency can choose this suv and the best part it really turn not like safari in which every time u need to put reverse to take a u turn another major thing is when riding in hills its average falls dramatically i got an avg of 11when took it out on mountains though its really fun to ride this car another thing this effeciency i got is just with driver there were no passanger so people u ca have a chance any more quarries feel free to contact 9999191077
