The Mitsubishi Lancer is a family car built by Mitsubishi Motors. It has been known as the Colt Lancer, Dodge/Plymouth Colt, Chrysler Valiant Lancer, Chrysler Lancer, Eagle Summit, Hindustan Lancer, Soueast Lioncel, Mitsubishi Carisma, and Mitsubishi Mirage in various countries at different times. Between its introduction in 1973 and 2008, over six million Lancers had been sold.
Hindustan Motor’s Mitsubishi Lancer with its much acclaimed racing pedigree came to India in 1998. The Mitsubishi Lancer is a compact sports sedan. The Lancer models were completely re-engineered and redesigned for 2010.
Exterior
The flowing symmetry of the Mitsubishi Lancer is an attention grabber. The new version sports a front end which is a slight variation on the concept car Concept X's shark-nosed front end. The first thing you notice on the car is a wedge-like profile and crisp, taut lines. According to the company, the aggression in styling is to convey an unmistakable brand identity.
Mitsubishi Lancer’s nose seems to be a copy of Audi's oversized grille, although the body-colored front bumper perfectly splits it up minimizing the gaping mouth. And if the angular headlights were human, they would be exotic eyes. The angular taillamps have that same exotic-eye look as the headlights. They wrap around the rear edges of the car, and cling to yesterday's trend: clear with the actual round lights, red, white, and amber, visible inside. The rear deck is quite short.
Complete with a longer wheelbase and wider track, the new Lancer is slightly shorter than its earlier models. There's nothing not to like about the interior of the Mitsubishi Lancer. The big rear wing on the other models blocks a chunk of visibility out the rear window.
Engine
The Mitsubishi Lancer is a road ripper. The vehicle belts out combos like 1.5-litre (petrol) - 86 bhp - 132.3 Nm and an all new 2.0 liter (diesel) - 67 bhp - 122.5 Nm torque.
Interior
The Mitsubishi Lancer is elegant and sophisticated once you step inside. The car comes with tilt adjustable power steering, electric-maneuverable mirrors and door mounted controls, besides very elegant upholstery and fittings. There's enough room for five. Instruments and dash are pleasing to the eye, and control knobs and switches for the various functions are easy to use. The sport bucket seats are comfortable, afford an excellent seating position, and are made of a handsome rugged cloth. The steering wheel has one of the nicest leather wraps we've felt, and is the perfect size for sporty driving. Cubbies and console compartments are good and plentiful, including cupholders between the front seats and in the front door pockets. Mitsibishi India is facing many problems due to less demand of its products - Cedia, Lancer, Pajero, Montero and the recently launched Outlander has also not changed it. Now, lets see that all new lancer can increase its sales in India.
Ride and Handling
The Mitsubishi Lancer is a delight to drive and the well balanced suspension system ensures that you glide smoothly over potholes.
Safety
The car also comes with several safety features such as collapsible steering column, three point ELS seat belts, centrally mounted fuel tanks, dual side impact bars, and three stage crumple zones that lend a sense of assurance while out on long journeys or traversing through heavy and hazardous traffic.
Competition
The Mitsubishi Lancer competes with the likes of Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent, Hyundai Verna, Cheverolet Optra, Maruti Dzire and Tata Indigo.
Colour and Variants
The Mitsubishi Lancer is available in five exotic hues - Black Onyx, Silver, Simply Red, Liquid Green and Scotia White. You have a choice of both petrol or diesel options.
Verdict
The Mitsubishi Lancer is a rally-proven engine technology on wheels. It is definitely worth owning primarily on account of its solid build, rally tested technology, smooth transmission and fuel economy. The plush interiors and body lines ooze character and style.
