      Hello everyone,

I am a newbie at Carwale and this is my first review of a car. Daewoo Matiz is a car that I have been driving for a long time now. I have a 2001 June model and have done 30K with it. I have to say that I'm very happy with the total package. It just was the best family small hatch but got discontinued. Here is what I feel about my first love (also the car that I learned to drive in 😷)

      Exterior

As soon as you look at the Matiz, you will get that strikingly aerodynamic feeling. You will feel that the Matiz just cuts the air and flows on the road as smooth as water. The finishing is quite nice. Even though it is a 9 year old car, I never feel that it has lost its exterior looks. The quality of the paint job is also good as the car has still retained its shine after all these years!

      Interior (Features, Space & Comfort)

                        - When you first get into the car, you might actually be surprised to find that it is not cramped at all. There is decent space for 5 adults with the front seats pushed back to the max. In this regard, the Matiz scored over the Indica, 800 and Santro way back in 2001.

                      - The quality of the interior is not up to the mark. The colors used inside are unconventional ones. Plastics used are cheap. But frankly speaking, what more can you expect out of a 2.9 lac car.

                      - The boot is not very large. It can take one big case along with a small bag.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox

                      - This is where the Matiz is a GEM. The engine has been superb with no major problems at all. To be frank, the only time my car goes to a garage is for a routine service.

                      - The pick up is more than decent. The engine is very responsive. Even now, there is torque in all gears all round the rev bracket. It doesn't need frequent gear changes. All you need to do is to just floor the throttle and off you go.

                      - Fuel economy is unmatched. I still get a FE of 15-16 kmpl inside the city and it goes past 20 if driven well on the highway. I just use unleaded petrol and not even the 'better' products available.

                      - The only problem one might find is with the gearbox. The throws are not short. Putting the car into second gear needs some serious practice. I always used to slip it into 4th by mistake when learning.

      Ride Quality & Handling

                      - The car is very stable even at speeds of 120kmph. I have made long journeys of up to 7 hours continuously and it has the ability to take such stress even during hot afternoons.

                      - The handling is good too. Can't expect a lot out of it. But it still is pretty decent.

                      - Due to the small size of the car and the ever alert engine, it is very easy to drive inside the city. Sometimes, I feel like I'm driving a Mini Cooper. That is how small this car is.

                      - Brakes are good but you have to travel a few inches on the brake pedal before the actual braking happens. It is very easy to get the Matiz skidding as it has powerful brakes and very less overall weight so got to be early on the brakes as much as possible.

      Final Words

My first love Matiz!! Matiz actually means CHARMING. It has always been a charm to sit behind the wheel in this beauty. I have really developed an emotional attachment to it. 😊

      Areas of improvement

A few years late on this section, I guess. 😝

Excellent fuel economy, interior space, stability, aerodynamic design, easy to manoeuvre in trafficGear box stiff ( 2nd G specially), not a large boot, fraction late response to braking.

This is one of the best cars ever launched in India. But people are reluctant to use this car because of the fear of availability of spares and services. But the reality is most of the spares are available. The car is really stylish, both inside and outside. The ride quality is best in its category in both front and back seats. You feel the difference in long drives. Regarding the fuel economy – the car really performs in highways, but an average car in city ride. Also the car is very safe compared to most other hatchbacks in India. It is the only car which passed the stringent 40% crash test in India. The leg space is very good both front and back, but Daewoo reduced the boot space. Initially when you start riding this car, you may not get excited because of its slow pickup and the poor gear shift – especially in second and reverse gears. In fourth and fifth gears you can really feel the performance of the car. Another growing problem is some insurance companies are reluctant to give insurance for this car. Overall the car is good and Matiz is an international brand. More over GM is planning to re-launch the car in India in the name Spark. Already they did it in many countries. We hope we can get back this wonderful car.Good value for money, Spacious, very good Safety for passenger, Stylish, Good Ride QualityLow boot Space, Low pickup, Uncomfortible gear shift, spares, insurance

I feel matiz to be the best small car launched in India till date. I bought a second hand 2001 model matiz in 2009 in coimbatore.I just made a service for 7000 rupees and the car runs very smooth. I was surprised at the stability of the car compared to Zen, Alto,Santro etc small cars. I drove the car till 150Kmph on coimbatore to bangalore highway on straight road and toped till 170kmph on slope downward on that highway. the car dint give even a little shake.Power steering is ok. Brakes are superb with Bridgestone tyres fitted. Its very easy to drive in cities too. I was thinking that the car was too small but after buying i felt the space was good. I get a mileage of 17kmpl on highway & 15kmpl in cities with air con off and 16kmpl on highway &13kmpl in cities with air con ON since my normal speed will be high. No one need to get frightened about the availability of spares. All the original spares are available at CAG coimbatore and there is no problem of maintanence.

The problem i face with this car is tat the gearbox is bit notchy and the pickup drops with air con on so i need to press pedal hard to accelarate.

As a overall i feel MATIZ to be the best car...

I was looking for a used car, My plan was to have the car for 2 years and then go for a new car(as this is my first car).. My options were Santro, Zen, maruti 800, and Matiz, After doing some reasearch and comparing the cars , i opted to go for a Used matiz... I liked the cute looks, the interior spacing and the dashboard, it has got very graceful curves  and seating capacity of 5 ( maruti and zen, its onli 4 persons)  and spares availability was not a problem as i knew many ppl ,who had matiz and they never complained of the spares, spares are easily available in big cities and metros . So i finally bought a Matiz SG(ps+ac) 2001 model with  60000 km on odo .. and to my luck.. everything was working perfectly and the vehicle needed no repairs and attention.
Its been one year now , since i have had the car, never had any problems with it, I am getting an average of 13-15 in city and 20-21 in long rides with 20% AC . it is very small car, gives an real advantage in traffic, outstandingly easy to turn and park in tight city streets with PS. the newer breed of cars like Zen estilo , hyundai i10 bear the same looks   I mainly use it for going on long drives and weekend getaways ..have travelled on bumpy village roads and highways, the car can handle bumpy roads and is very smooth and  unexpectedly comfortable even on long journeys.. It feels very smooth on top gear(5th gear), u get great mileage if u maintain at an optimum speed of  80-90 kmph ..The interiors are very spacious.. feels like a big car from inside, i particularly like the leg room and the spacing between yr normal head position and the windscreen , which is so much cramped in the zen and maruti 800's..the back is also generous .the car can easily seat 5 persons. the boot space for the luggage is cramped, so on long getaways, u need to seriously think about yr luggage or install a luggage carrier on d roof ... to add one more point on the looks , it was designed by

for the performance, It has a very decent pickup and power ( 52 ps)  for a very small engine ( 796cc ) for a quick comparision in 800 cc class, maruti 800 - 37 ps ,and alto -47ps ..So i can easily call it the monster in its class :) .. the AC is very good, it cools the cabin in no time.. but the car feels sluggish when u have the ac on.. it is natural tat since it is a small engine.

The Matiz is a Chevrolet now.Chevrolet has taken over Daewoo and brought bak the matiz 2007 in a new package called Spark(daewoo were still selling their cars in some select countries till 2007 but in India they withdrew their support by 2002 ) .. but i m not sure, if chevrolet support the older matiz and produce spares for it...

One more pointer for the cute looks and versatile design of matiz. It was designed by Dr.Ulrich Bez , the same guy who was earlier leading the designs at Porshe motor company.. the headlight kind of gets its round looks from Porshe 911 :) Wow matiz has racing roots .... ha ha ha ..
amazing mileage, Great styling, Fun car to Drivepickup sluggish when AC on

I have owned this small car since Nov. 1999. This is very fuel efficient car when driven in between 60-70 Km/hr speed in fifth gear at hiways it gives fantastic milage of around 25 km/ltr which is amazing. since this car is driven mostly in hills of Himachal Pradesh it gives milage of  around 20Km/ltr. But in city conditions the milage is poor around 12 Km/ltr but still much better than the other cars in this segment. i never feel the maintenance cost a burden on me as it is very low. spares are readily available at reasonable price as these being supplied by GM now. I was planning to sell this car but now I have to rethink on my decision as this car has not given any trouble since I bought it. I really love this car very much.

higly fuel efficient car, small but big from inside, most beautiful small car, very low mtce. costlow milage in city conditions.

If Daewoo didnt stopped their production iam damn sure they will be in the first place in the market. my matiz mileage is 18-22kmpl
and it has a super power with least 800cc engine. braking was soo good and very smooth engine. u can go race with any other high range cars serely matiz will win. it was made for an all kind of people my top speed in that car is 140kmph.

but the spares r nt available in india
if u own this u want to worry for the spares thn not for any thing
unbelivable fuel economy, compact, easy to drive in gaps,no maintainenceno spares, u showed only 5 stars for rating this car

There were many instances where friends suggested me to sell of the car or i will not get the resale price, as on today the price for my Matiz SP - 2000 model does not fetch me more than 45,000. But when i drive my car i find all luxouries and comforts, compared to any other small cars in india. Only problem is when i on the A/c there is no pick-up in the 2nd gear. The car is Steady on roads and enjoy my drive on the Mumbai-Pune Express Way. Its good to hear that GM has taken over and there are spares to be available at a cheaper rate. I have decided not to sell my car. Thanks

Value for money, great style and spacious.Gear movements especially second gear not smooth, when A/C is on there is no pick-up

I purchased new SD model Matiz in December, 2000  which has  crossed 1,06,000 kms till date.I have  driven this car  from Chennai to Cochin and back twice, first in May 2004 and recently  in May 2009 with my family of four adults, each time covering a distance of 1500 kms including ghat sections without a  hitch. Thanks to the good roads, I could constantly touch 120km  without any discomfort. I changed the original set of tyres only after 70000 kms.  I feel  the car is still much better than most new hatch back models in its class available in the market.I am lucky that I have a good  work shop in Chennai which exclusively takes care of all Daewoo models.Availability of spare parts thus far has never been a problem. I am planning to keep this car for at least the next two years and hopefully, it will continue to serve me as it has done all these nine years.

good control, good style and a trust worthy matea slight reduction in power with ACon in city traffic.

I purchased A Matiz SD in December 2009 and have crossed 105000 km as on date. I have driven this car twice from Chennai to Cochin and back covering a distance of 1500 km including Ghat sections with my family of four adults. The first was in May 2004 and recently in May 2009. Thanks to the good road conditions I could easily clock speeds of 120 kms with ease. On both occasions we did not face any kind of problem. Despite the long years I feel it still is much better than most cars of its class in the market today. It’s a very well balanced car and can handle curves comfortably even at high speeds. Luckily we have a very good mechanic in Chennai whose workshop specializes in all Daewoo models. I wish to keep this car for at least the next two years and hopefully it will continue to serve me and my family faithfully as it has done in the last nine years.

Excellent looks, Good drive and fuel economyDip in power with A/C

I have been driving my Casablanca whote Matiz for almost 7 years now. It is special for me because it is my first car. I was lucky I could opt for the top-end SA model back in 2001. With its rear spoiler, rear wiper and defogger, it looks classier than the other versions. The interiors are also better with the glossy aluminium-spotted design on the central console on the dashboard. Minor additions like the cigarette lighter-cum-mobile charger, anti-theft locking etc add to the value of the car.

Admittedly, the beautiful shape and the curvy contours was one of the reasons why I bought the Matiz in the first place. The mono-volume design of the Matiz was so ahead of its time back in 1998 when it was launched and even 2001. So much so that even after more than 10 years after its launch and various other good compact car launches, the old Matiz still manages to give a decent competition to the new-gen cars like Hyundai i10, Maruti Zen Estilo etc.

A compact car with a 796cc 3-cylinder engine is never going to be a performance machine. My early expectations about the acceleration and flat-out speed of the Matiz was not much. Therefore when I actually got to drive one, I was not disappointed. To be honest, the acceleration figures with the A/C on and with a full load of passengers is really poor. In order to get the car to a decent 60kmph, you either have to jettison a passenger or two or turn the A/C off!!

But all said and done, the positives in terms of fuel efficiency (I get consistently 14-15kpl in city with moderate use of A/C), ease of use, low maintenance, the cuteness coefficient, far outweigh the negattives.

The new Chevy Spark launched by GM in late 07 marks a new beginning for the good old Matiz. Sales have been slow to pick up, primarily because GM does not yet have the manufacturing prowess to satiate the demand for the car. Its Halol factory can manufacure only 85000 cars a year, and the Spark has to jostle for floor space with the Optra Magnum, Tavera and Aveo, all of which roll out of the same plant. Come mid 08, GM should start
assembly of its cars from its spanking new plant at Talegaon, Pune. It is a good bet that towards late 2008, the sales of Spark would see an upward trend once the waiting times come down to days from the current 3-4 months.
Compact and classy exterior design, fuel efficient, low cost of ownershipResale value depends on the amount of fuel in the tank!!, power delivery at low RPMs
