chevrolet optra magnum 2.0 LT black color review:

Why did I go for Chevy Optra Magnum TDCi LT?
I visited the Sundaram Motors Show room in Chennai for a test drive and they offered me to test drive 2 optras. 1 was a brand new one and the other had done 25000km. I really appreciated this test drive offer as no other car dealer did so.
The Test drive of the new car was wow. I was amazed by the performance, ride/handling, comfort and absolute no noise in the cabin other than the air flowing through the a/c vents. Pickup was great, I was doing 80km in second gear and the handling was good. Gear
shift was very good. The Optra swallowed the potholes with ease, the independent suspensions really did what it was designe to do. It was a drivers dream. There was volumes of space in the car and rear legroom was the best of all the cars I tested.

Test Drive of the 25000KM Optra, driving this car was not different from the new one other than that it was noisier when you rolled down the windows. The performance was almost same, so was the ride and handling. I did hear or feel any unwanted rattles or vibrations.

The two test drives really gave a very good insight into the overall quality of the car. I felt it was good.

GM's Cashless ownership offer also appealed to me though I knew this was another marketing strategy. But, a lot of folks advised me to go for it.

The cost of maintenance was a lot cheaper and price of spare parts were affordable for me.
and frankly it beats expectations by miles. I have clocked 3000 kms so far and have tried highways, city rides and rough roads.
The torque wave is simply addictive. The ride quality is excellent. Car is roomy and the interior finish is top notch.

Bit of sluggishness in low RPM but there is an abundance of power in any gear at RPM > 1800. getting to 140 has never been easier. However i felt city ride is jerky, the car is always rushing forward.after some time to time drives i am very convenient with it now
I love the grunt of the engine and the way the engine sounds after 2200 RPM.

PS is heavy, thus handling in city is bit of a pain. AC is a pleasure and like most CRDIs doesn't impact the power at all.

the power is brutal, unlike verna, the car accelerates on full control and power delivery is predictable. High speed handling is good.

Gear shift is smooth.

Back seat comfort was not great for my mother who had back ache, solved the problem with a cushion. Leg room is ample. Lot of small storage spaces

I choose the LT model because I normally drive AROUND 1500KMS AND  long drives, so I  feel the necesity for ABS and Airbags.

Its living upto this its motto - "Powered to take on the road" it really has the Power that never lets you down. It has a lot of power left in each of the gears.
Its car that will satisfy you on either ways - you drive or be driven around.

I haven't ripped it MUCH only touched 100Kmh occasionally, just waited and waited the engine to set in during the first 1000 km, and after the first services I hadd "unleash hell". FE is pretty good, I got around 15km/l mostly driving in Chennai traffic with AC on

service of cchevrolet was excellent  and there have been some frequent enquiries by chevy people to find out i felt  even after 2 months of purchase also to remind me of my first service

had no problems of any kind   since purchasing of my car

and its a true VFM car

and my wife also loves it    very much

and i am being extremely careful   and i am very glad my intense black optra  shines  like it did  when i first got it out  of showroom   and till date no scratches and hopefully nothing like that happens!

lastly very  hearty thanks to deepam rajiv sri   for helping me out

Hi Ashwin i'm looking to buy a new diesel car and i shorlisted 3 cars which are fiat linea, hyundai verna and chevy optra, i like optra's powerband, can u tell me how much is your optra service cost after the free services !!! is it expensive in maintenance !!!

Ashwin Kumar on 15 Jul, 2009 at 05:33 PM

looks like you are thinking of petrol petrol optra aint that good even aveo has some gear issues from the choices you have listed out sx4 is the best as verna also is good when its a diesel so my opinion would be to go for sx4 if its petrol driven car u want and verna if its diesel my personel suggestion would be to go for fiesta 1.6s an ultimate car in every aspect

hi!sameer optra magnum is a great car to go for and is a vfm in its segment but yes city driving will be sluggish at low rpm but its not something of a big concern with few drives we will be able to handle the car better as was the case with me and finally only optra magnum diesel is the best not petrol one so go for it only if u want diesel version happy and safe motoring!!

Hi Ashwin, Am planning a car in this segement & have been weighing various options: after going thru ur review, the option of an optra might transform into a final decision. I must compliment you on ur coverage which made me read each word till the end (I never go thru reviews). A commendable job: covering all aspects & writing them so patiently. I own a Honda city(2004) & am a bit apprehensive about optra's perfrmnce as compared to honda during city driving: wud appreciate ur views.
