The Fiat Palio has been around for donkey’s years but presents itself as a competent package even now. The looks have been refreshed and endow the Palio with much-needed youthful appeal. It manages to look fresh and handsome and has much better interior trim, with the dual tone treatment being given generously. The design and layout though remains same, so does the quality. The feel of the interior trim gives an impression that the interior of the Palio will hold itself well over the years. There is ample space for five persons and the seats are munificent and offer good support.

There are three engines to choose from; a 1.1-litre, four pot motor which is underpowered, sending 57bhp to the front wheels while the more potent 1.6-litre engine delivers 100 horses and keeps performance freaks happy. The latest addition to the range is a 1.3-litre, 75bhp MultiJet diesel engine that does well to satisfy everyone with its modest performance and decent mileage figures.

The handling is classic Fiat – taut and confidence inspiring. You can drive this car hard without fearing that she will give way. The ride is pliant and one of the best on a small car. The Palio absorbs everything that comes in its way with flair and does not bother the occupants by sending the shivers inside. An extremely good ride quality is accentuated by good handling. The brakes sadly leave much to be desired. They lack bite and the feel is also not encouraging.

It is a competent package that is a good VFM proposition but is suffering because of the unsuccessful stay of Fiat in India. However, Fiat has committed to build upon its image and also serve India better.
