The Chevy SRV or Sports Recreation Vehicle is based on the Optra platform. It is making an entrance as a premium hatchback which will be difficult to digest for the common Indian consumer. Up front it seems like an Optra but then the rear three-quarter look takes it to another dimension. After this look the whole profile and the outlook changes. It’s an absolute stunner and with a spoiler it gets even better. It has been regarded by many as the best-looking car in the sub-Rs 10lakh category. It lends desirability a new tilt with its street-racer image.

The 1.6l engine complements the stunning road presence, with 100bhp to throw around. The handling characteristics even at high speeds and feel really indicate the impressive suspension package. But then it loses out when it comes to the gearbox and steering, which don’t complement the ride. Mileage figures vary from 11-12kpl overall and is good for a car that is on the heavier side.

Italian design and engineering to suit the Indian palate is close to the perfect combination. Gives you good punches when you want say go and is sturdy. The interiors are spacious and all along you would have to remind yourself that it is not a hatchback. Seems like it is waiting to get out of this mould like a rebel. The overall feel of owning one would be great as an extension of one’s personality.

An ambitious effort from Chevy and one that you certainly cannot ignore. No doubts on the package. The only aspect that will hold you back is the price tag and the fact that is a hatchback even though it does not feel like one.
