I have (test) driven both the vehicles for multiple times and following are my observations:

    Swift VDi:

    PROS:
    - Peace of mind guaranteed by Maruti.
    - Vehicle with sporty looks.
    - Better pick up, plus, turbo at lesser RPMs, so early effect!
    - Low turning radius (perhaps, 4.7m against 5.2m of Palio!).
    - The best in terms of fuel economy.
    - A silent diesel car!
    - Light weight (it feels at least!) steering wheel.
    - Optional ABS.
    - Excellent resale value.

    CONS:
    - Huge price differe

nce between LDi and VDi variants compare to the features being provided.
    - Lesser features than Palio.
    - Huge waiting period.
    - Have heard that mileage figures go down drastically after 10K KMs.
    - Rear wash wiper / defogger not available.
    - Call it a 4.5 seater without adequate knee room.
    - Modern but dark interiors.
    - A small boot.
    - VDi version is over-priced.

    Palio MJD SDX:

    PROS:
    - The safest (amongst hatchbacks without ABS/Airbags).
    - Tank build quality (yes, I mean it).
    -

    - Ride quality / Ergonomics / Suspension.
    - A five seater with adequate space.
    - No compromise when it comes to safety related features across all variants.
    - More spacious, stronger, more secure.
    - Large boot space.
    - Will last for years and years and years.

    CONS:
    - Old dashboard being sold in India (Check interiors of European Palio).
    - No optional ABS / Air bag(s)!
    - Limited color choice.
    - Higher level of engine noise (perhaps, the cooling fan!)
    - Turbo starts after 2200 RPM (Un

(Unlike Swift, which is at 2000 RPM).
    - Tatas will always promote Indica / Indigo.
    - There is no strong commitment/plan to continue Palio on long run in India.
    - Lesser resale value (not sure what after Tata Fiat tie up).

This classification will go loooong... to summarize: Swift is practical choice, but, Palio - you will love it day by day after buying.

Someone has truly said, if you buy Palio, people will call you s_tupid / s_illy on face, but secretly they wish they could have been

    All the best!
