After de-licensing of the Automobile industry in 1991, India’s vehicle population has been increasing exponentially. With rapidly increasing vehicle population there is concurrently need for modern facilities for recycling and recovering materials from vehicles, which reach the end of their useful life. In US, Europe and Japan recycling facilities gradually developed along with the organic growth of automobile industry. End of life regulations mandate recyclability levels for new design vehicles in Europe and Japan. As motorcycles form a small proportion of population, they do not come under the ambit of these rules.

The year 2010 ended on a high for the Automobile Industry in India and the fact that there were more than 50 launches throughout the year in different segments shows the kind of interest car manufacturers are taking into bringing their products in the market. Society of Indian Automobiles (SIAM), in its yearly report mentioned that the Indian car market grew by 32.69 % in 2010.

The ‘Free Pollution Check Up’ campaign aimed at spreading awareness about environment, will be held on 5th and 6th June at all Skoda dealerships across India. SkodaAuto India is the first automobile company to initiate a “Free Pollution Check” camp for all customers across India celebrating the World Environment Day. 

The auto sector in India has had a rollicking year with the sales figures jumping every month. The slowdown had its effects but didn't last long. According to figures available, the automotive industry in India grew by 26.41% in sales in 2009-10.

The Budget for 2010-11 is just hours away and the auto industry is rife with news that the excise duty on diesel engines which was reduced a couple of years ago would again be increased and this news has certainly not gone down well with the auto experts.

Auto makers in India is expecting the government to continue with the stimulus packages in this Budget as well, provided to them during the economic downturn.

The 49th Annual SIAM Convention got underway in the presence of several industry luminaries as well as senior ministry officials and bureaucrats. 2009 also marks the beginning of SIAM’s golden anniversary celebrations.  The all-day convention has Revival, Restructuring and Sustainable Growth as the Theme was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, the Hon. Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Mr. Vilas Rao Deshmukh in the presence of top executives of both Indian and International automobile and auto ancillary companies.

Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), is organizing the World Hydrogen Technology Convention 2009 - a three day summit focusing on Hydrogen as the ‘Fuel of Future.’ The Convention is aimed at addressing the issues related to safety, fuel economy and environment conservation.

Passenger Vehicles segment during April-July 2009 grew at 9.45 percent over same period last year. Passenger Cars grew by 10.54 percent, Utility Vehicles fell by (-) 1.53 percent and Multi Purpose Vehicles grew by 22.90 percent in this period. In July 2009, Passenger vehicles sales recorded a growth rate of 29.18 percent over July 2008.

Mr Ravi Kant, President, SIAM cited several positive proposals in the Union Budget 2009-10 presented by the Hon’ble Finance Minister of India. These included increased expenditure by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), enhancement of outlay of Prime Minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana by 59% and further expansion of allocation to JNNURM. These would have significant positive impact on the automobile industry, in the medium to long term.
