Maruti Suzuki’s best seller Alto was dethroned by its bigger sibling, Swift. After taking over from the M800 in around 2006, the Alto sold moiré than any other car in the Indian market month after month, year after year. The Swift, that sold over 19000 odd units as against 17000 odd of the Alto, has gained the crown. Maruti need not read much in this event as these days manufacturers are selling cars 20:80 as of petrol : diesel and the Alto does not have a diesel.

Further, Maruti plans to get the Alto replacement soon to compete with the modern-ish designs of the Eon and Nano.

Another feather in the cap of MSIL is the 8500 bookings garnered by the Ertiga even before its official launch in Indonesia. Pitted against the Toyota Avanza and Nissan Livina, the Ertiga betters them in price as well as some dimensions. Suzuki plans to sell around 15000 units within a year in Indonesia.

• Hyundai has announced the '5-star Assurance Program' for the Santro and i10, providing free maintenance, low insurance costs, extendable warranty, loyalty benefits and road-side assistance. • Suzuki Motor Corp. has recalled around 109,000 Swift cars globally citing a possible fuel leakage problem. The recall will not affect the Indian bestseller as the cars sold in India are locally produced.

• Mahindra and Mahindra have launched the Alfa Plus, the extended bed version of its popular commercial 3-wheeler Alfa, with better torque and transmission to supplement the enhanced load carrying capacity.

They say that the already protected Japanese market should be restructured before any such incident. Given the 'zero per cent' import taxes on cars in Japan, we wonder where Ford is driving at.

• Volkswagen has replied strongly to the Greenpeace declaration of them as the 'Dirtiest car-makers in Europe'. Volkswagen has announced that, by 2015, volkswagens will emit less than 120 gms of carbon per kilometer while burning a measly 5.3 litres of fuel for every 100 kilometers run.

Japanese auto maker, Suzuki Motor Corp., has announced the recall of about 1,09,000 units of its model Swift, world-wide. The recall is to check and rectify the possible defect that may lead to petrol leakage. Most of the recalls are in the local (Japan) market, while other recalls are from EU, Australia and Mexico.

The Indian arm of Suzuki, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), was prompt to clarify that this recall does not affect any Indian customer as the Swift sold in India is manufactured locally and not imported.

The Swift has been a runaway success for MSI in India and has helped MSI consolidate its market leader position when competitors were hitting hard on the company. The Swift is the bestselling car in the high-volume premium hatchback segment.

Maruti Suzuki will launch the new-generation Swift tomorrow on the 17th of August. We have driven the new Swift. 

With the oncoming of the Super Turbo Diesel SX4 and the subsequently the company's CBU Kizashi, whose deliveries to customers begins in March, we will get to see how the company sustains this growth.
