  • Petrol prices in India have gone up by around Rs 7.50 i.e. above 10 per cent, inclusive of state taxes, with effect from today. Auto stocks of companies such as Maruti and Mahindra have suffered thanks to this large price hike. 
  • The Indian Rupee has plummeted even further to touch 56 rupees to a dollar. A panel of ministers will meet tomorrow to decide on a restructuring of pricing for diesel, kerosene and LPG, whose subsidies are driving the price of petrol ever higher.  
  • The proposed annual fitness checks we had mentioned some time ago for private vehicles may be in place by the end of the year. Not only this, the vehicle's insurance renewal will be dependent on whether the vehicle passes the fitness test - a noble sentiment, but it remains to be seen the implementation of the rule. 
  • Audi has launched the Audi Car-life Advance program for customers buying the A4, A6 and Q5. The program is based on EMIs that include insurance costs, routine maintenance and extended warranty payments merged into one so that the customer does not have to shell out money over and over again.
  • Mahindra and Mahindra are trying their best to enter the growing Chinese markets astride their Korean acquisition Ssangyong. Under its previous owners, Ssangyong brand was damaged in China and M&M are facing difficulty in restructuring the brand in the Chinese market.
  • Mahindra is back in the running for the acquisition of Saab - Youngman, which was the frontrunner so far, has resigned from the race for unspecified reasons. 
  • Ford India, as a part of its CSR, had undertaken ‘Operation Goodwill’ to improve the education infrastructure in the areas surrounding its Chennai Factory. Ford India’s parent company, Ford USA has given an additional $250,000 to Ford India to go ahead with the welfare activities.
  • Engineering students from the Lovely Professional Univeristy in Punjab have built a golf cart as an engineering project that can be controlled by mobile phone through internet connectivity. This means that with the help of cameras and a smartphone, it can be driven by someone anywhere in the world - theoretically.
  • Mazda and Fiat have signed a memorandum to develop a small sports car based on the Miata MX 5. Fiat group’s Alfa Romeo will be working with Mazda to create the new roadster.
  • Renault has confirmed the unveiling of the Alpine concept at the Monaco GP this weekend. Renault has confirmed that the 400 bhp car can be homologated in the future, but is an essentially track spec car as of now. It is also mulling a new high-end brand in much the same way that Honda has Acura or Toyota, Lexus - but no concrete plans exist right now. 
  • BMW has tripled its Chinese production output with its second Chinese factory. When complete, the total Chinese production will be 200,000 units annually in 2014 - but demand is expected to be double that in the future.

    • Volkswagen is said to be planning to open a factory in Gujarat after the its consulting agency met Gujarat officials some time ago. Volkswagen has put its 2000 crore Maharashtra investments plans on hold.
    • The radically designed Ferrari FF, the proper four seater tourer, was spotted in Mumbai. We hope to see some of these smoking the Indian roads soon.
    • BMW has won the coveted 'world's most valuable car brand' title from Toyota who won the crown in 2011. Toyota's brand value plummeted by 10 percent while BMW gained by similar amounts.
    • Labour unions representing auto workers are taking a tough stand towards companies in Germany. The Unions are not accepting a hike lower than their demands and organising warning strikes. German auto employees are some of the best paid across the world.
    • The Worthersee lake hot hatch festival saw the 217 bhp Polo R concept being unveiled. The Polo R is a street legal version of the rally spec WRC Polo.
    • The Skoda Citigo Rally concept was also showcased at Worthersee. The design that looked stupendous when rendered on paper, did not work up to expectations. The extra large front facia and wide body kit did not go well with the compact Citigo lines.
    • Ford had unveiled its new Fusion based NASCAR race car in January 2012.. Fans will get a glimpse of the new car this Thursday in North Carolina.
    • Toyota is also going strong into NASCAR with its 2013 Camry based stock car with a composite body over tube frame rear-wheel drive and a V8 engine.
    • Ford's logo, the Blue Oval, that was pledged against a loan package in 2006, can now be pulled out of danger as the company was able to sustain though the recession by restructuring. Now that credit rating agencies like the Fitch have upgraded the credit ratings of Ford, the loan burden will ease out and the pledged intellectual property can be taken out of the equation.       • The Tamil Nadu government scored an ace amidst policy paralysis by signing pacts with five automotive giants ensuring a total investment of Rs 5700 crore in the state and roughly 10000 job opportunities. Companies like Daimler CV, Yamaha, Nissan-Ashok Leyland, Eicher Motors and Philips Carbon Black are investing in Oragadam near Chennai which is developing as an extensive automotive hub in south India.
      • India’s first online store for tyres, ChangeMyTyre.com, has started business with its launch and will deliver tyres across all major cities in India. CEO and co-founder, Mr. Neeraj Chauhan hopes to make the tyre market transparent and convenient thereby gaining big business.
      • The Audi A3 Sedan, based on the A3 MQB platform will be positioned just below the Audi A4. Technically competing with the VW Passat, Skoda Superb, Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the speculated Mercedes CLA, Audi hopes to take the segment head on.
      • Mercedes Benz India is beaming after registering a 30 per cent growth in sales year on year in spite of the said global slowdown. Around 7430 Mercs went on sale compared to last year’s 5810 units.
      • Hyundai is now offering the rear-view camera as standard fitment on the fluidic Verna albeit at increased cost for the customer.
      • General Motors have forayed into the competition by revealing pictures of the Trax, a mini-SUV that competes with the Ford EcoSport and Maruti XA-Alpha. The Trax will be showcased at the Paris Motor Show in September this year. They will have to rename the model when it comes to India given the existence of Force Trax.
      • The Mercedes Benz E-class facelift was spotted testing in Europe. Though heavily camouflaged, the new E-class gave up a few details. Integrated daytime running lights into the headlamp, re-styled bumpers and tail are some of the features. We expect this car to debut in India with its world debut as the new A6 and current ruling BMW 5-series are eating away at Mercedes’ share in the segment.
      • An American military research facility is working on using the exhaust gas thermodynamics of battle tanks to generate electricity to run the on board computers and other systems as far as possible. This would improve the efficiencies and also reduce emissions. It sounds similar to the electrical turbocharger that is rumoured to debut on the next Subaru Impreza WRX.
      • Porsche has denied that it will develop a sports car that will slot under the Boxster. The Pajun, which we reported just days ago will compete with the E-Class, ‘may become reality’ in five or six years.
      • McLaren has developed a convertible MP4-12C. It will go on sale after the McLaren F1 successor, we imagine. 
      • Eterniti Motors has garnered their first sale of the Artemis super-SUV at the Bejing Auto Show.
      • The US senate has okayed the installation of ‘black boxes’ in cars from 2015 onwards. This should help settle more than a few lawsuits quickly! 
      • Jay Leno has added a Tata Nano to his garage. This wouldn’t have been remarkable if his garage didn’t house over 200 cars, some of them one-offs and really rare masterpieces.

    • Mahindra and Mahindra looks likely to set up a Rs 3000 crore plant in Uttarakhand. Dr. Pawan Goenka, president of automotive and farm equipment sector had a meeting with the state's chief minister Vijay Bahuguna on the 26th of this month regarding the facility. 
    • Tata Motors has announced the launch of its 'Driving Expedition' series, to be handled by Tata Motors Full Throttle, its motorsports division. Any owner with a Tata utility vehicle will be able to participate for a free. There are six events organised and you can find out more at www.tatamotorsfullthrottle.com 
    • The RTO in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat, has incorporated a new system for light vehicles: they do not have to be presented at the RTO for verification of the chassis number before the registration is handed out. This will certainly make the procedure of buying a new vehicle easier for customers.
    • Ford has reported a first-quarter profit of USD 1.4 billion. Most of the profit has been from the North American market, with operations in Europe and Asia showing losses. 
    • If you're a fan of the rotary engine, here's some good news: Mazda is doubling the number of units in the final run of the RX-8, the Spirit R. That's 1000 more RX-8s, thanks to demand. The final examples will roll off the production line in June this year. 
    • Lamborghini has trademarked the name 'Huracan'. It is Spanish for 'hurricane' and at the moment doesn't seem to have any link to bullfighting. However, it is the name for the Mayan god of wind, storm and fire, which seems quite appropriate for the kind of products that Lambo makes.
    • Aston Martin's flagship model, the DBS, is scheduled for replacement soon, and a last-run limited version is expected. This is not unlike the time the Vanquish was replaced by the DBS and offered 40 examples of the Vanquish S Ultimate Edition before production stopped. The DBS equivalent is expected to number 100 units and cost around USD 300,000 - or Rs 1.6 crore before taxes and duties.

    • SBI has cut loan rates, including those on car loans. This could make other banks follow suit to keep themselves in contention with the consumer.
    • If you're in the market for a petrol car, now is the time to make a purchase. Manufacturers are offering everything from cash discounts to gold coins and LED televisions to ensure that petrol variants and models keep selling. Manufacturers are also encouraging dealers by increasing margins on petrol vehicles.
    • The negotiations for salaries at Maruti's Manesar plant have begun. The Maruti Suzuki Workers' Union has given the management a list of demands, which include things like a rise in basic salaries and linking of dearness allowance to basic pay.
    • Audi has shown the facelifted Q5 at the Beijing Auto Show. There aren't any major changes to the Q5, but it sports new headlamps, a new grille and bumper. We will see the 3.2-litre petrol V6 replaced by the new 3.0-litre supercharged one. The hybrid version will debut in the US market. There will even be an sporty S variant slated for a June launch, to coincide with the 24 hours of Le Mans. 
    • Fiat is launching the Viaggio sedan in the Chinese market. The Viaggio is a sedan based on the Dodge Dart (itself based on an Alfa design) and it is slightly bigger than the Linea. It looks modern and we think it would make a nice addition to Fiat India's range - here's to hoping they make a right-hand drive version. 
    • Audi has showcased the A6 e-Tron concept at the Beijing Auto Show. The A6 e-Tron is a plug-in hybrid that runs primarily off its electric motors, with a four-cylinder petrol engine to help either acceleration or range when needed. 
    • Ford USA is undertaking an interesting project to use old money - literally, old paper money that is shredded in the USA - to use in the construction of its vehicles. It already uses soy beans, denim and plastic bottles in its products, instead of substances derived from petroleum.
    • BMW has shown the i8 Spyder Concept at the Beijing Auto Show. Even accounting for the practicality that will be added to the concept, it will be one desirable yet fuel efficient car.
    • Bentley is considering petrol/hybrid powertrains for its upcoming SUV, the EXP 9F. The existing engines in the Bentley range, the 6.0-litre W12 and the 4.0-litre V8 will be options for sure, but a plug-in hybrid V6 might also be under development. All powertrains promise the performance that Bentley is renowned for. However, will we ever see a diesel Bentley? If they can make one refined enough, we can just imagine it delivering the 'wave of torque' that Bentleys are so famous for...

    • Sebastien Vettel stormed to victory at Bahrain, taking his first win of the season, to lead the drivers' championship table. Kimi Raikonnen in his Lotus had a dream run along with teammate Romain Grosjean to clinch the second and third places.
    • Jaguar has launched the XJ ultimate edition in China. The car is set to have super luxury features with a price tag around $ 125,000. India will receive this, too, by the end of the year.
    • Jaguar also confirmed the 3.0 liter V6 petrol engine for the F-type developing 375 Bhp and 332 pound-feet torque. The engine will be unique for the F-type.
    • Land Rover unveiled its Victoria Beckham edition Evoque. The matte black paint contrasts the gloss black and rose-gold trim interiors. Only 200 examples of this will be built.
    • Vilner, the Bulgarian tuner, targets the Land Rover Defender Wood. The exotic defender will sport Nappa leather and alcantara with a Ground zero music system.
    • Toyota unveils three concepts vehicles including a petrol-hybrid at the Beijing Auto show.
    • Ferrari unveiled 'HY-KERS', the mid-rear mounted V12 hybrid drivetrain to be found in the new Enzo.
    • Volvo's D3 range will now be available in Europe after its launch in India. The D3 engine develops 163 PS/400 Nm while returnign a fuel economy of 18.5 kmpl on the S60 and 14.7 on the XC 60.
    • Italian marque Lamborghini finally unveiled the Urus 4x4, the carbon-fibre laden 600 PS bull. With cutting edge technology running the car, Lamborghini has big plans to take the model ahead.
    • Maruti Suzuki, Toyota and Hyundai have focussed their resources on developing sustainable diesel technology. Selling petrol vehicles is getting difficult by the day due to skyrocketing petrol prices. With the government favouring diesel, these manufacturers are betting big on it. Maruti is setting up a Rs 1700 crore plant to produce diesel engines while Hyundai and Toyota have similar plans in the pipeline.

    • CASKA, a Chinese company renowned for its in-car multimedia systems, is setting up an R&D facility in India. Considering how much emphasis we put on that particular aspect of our cars, that's a very good move from Caska.
    • Vinod Dasari, the managing director of Ashok Leyland, has ruled out the possibility of the company entering the passenger car market. This has arisen on the back of speculation that Nissan will be launching a small car by 2014 that will be developed in partnership with the truck manufacturer. The two companies already have a tie-up for light commercial vehicles. 
    • The Bahrain F1 grand prix seems to be in the eye of a storm yet again - four Force India mechanics were witness to a petrol bomb attack on their way back to their hotel from the track, and two have requested to go back to Europe. Protestors in the nation are trying their hardest to get the race cancelled; with mere hours remaining for initial qualifying to begin, tensions are running high. 
    • AMG has officialy announced the discontinuation of its partnership with Ducati: unsurprising, since the latter has been purchased by Audi, one of Mercedes's biggest rivals. 
    • Mercedes is apparently going to restructure its naming conventions. With the advent of ever-newer models that straddle segments, the requirement was going to arise. However, it is still going to be confusing nomenclature: we suspect we'll have to put up a Mercedes dictionary once it comes out. The G-Class remains untouched, however. 
    • Lamborghini has revealed the outline of their first SUV since the LM002 in a sketch included in the invite to the unveiling at the Shanghai Auto Show. It will be called the Lamborghini Urus.
    • BMW is considering an M version of the 7-series - that is news because outside of a very limited run many generations ago, the 7-series has never had an 'M' badge on it. 
    • Ford's Chinese arm, Changan Ford Mazda Automobile, has announced its intention to build a new plant that will double its manufacturing capacity in the country. This will make China Ford's biggest producer of Blue Ovals outside its home base in Michigan, USA. 
    • The Lada 2107, aka the Riva, has come to the end of its production life. The Riva has been to the Russians what the Ford Crown Victoria has been to America, or the Hindustan Ambassador to India.

      The Company's plants in Asia Pacific and Africa share in this aggressive goal, and have already reduced water usage per vehicle by 25% from 2000 to 2011.  Innovative water saving technologies are also being implemented at other Ford plants in the region, including the Chongqing, China and Sanand, India assembly plants.  

      To reach zero liquid discharge, the Chennai plant is implementing a combination of physical, chemical and biological treatment operations. Wastewater streams from the assembly and engine plants are individually pre-treated before being mixed with sanitary and cafeteria wastewaters. Following biological treatment, the stream passes through media filtration and activated carbon before it is ultra-filtered. This final stream is sent to a 3-stage reverse osmosis system which produces a large volume of salt-free water and a small volume of concentrated brine. The water in the brine is boiled off, condensed and reused in the plant leaving behind a solid salt.
