Mercedes-Benz has announced that the CLS facelift will make its debut at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed, in the last week of June. Details and images of the facelift are expected to be officially released a week prior to the unveiling.
The four-door coupe has been spotted testing around Europe quite a few times and is just a mid-cycle facelift. It only gets minor cosmetic updates to the exterior like a revised front grille and front and rear skirts. The biggest update however, is the new Active Multibeam ILS LED system which adapts the headlight beam according to road and traffic conditions, much like Audi’s Matrix Beam Technology.
The interior of the CLS facelift will also be updated with a new steering wheel and a free-standing screen in the centre console, like in the A-Class and B-Class. It will also be equipped with the latest version of Mercedes’ COMAND Online system with NTG 5.0 version.
In India, the CLS is available only in a single variant, the 350 BlueEFFICIENCY. This car is powered by 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine churning out 306bhp and 370Nm of torque. The engine will send power to the rear wheels through a 9G TRONIC gearbox.
In the Indian market, the Mercedes-Benz CLS rivals other coupe-sedans like the Audi A7 and BMW 6 Series. While this segment has been steadily rising in some foreign markets, the trend for these expensive cars hasn’t really caught up in India yet. The CLS is imported as a CBU and due to the high price, has to compete with other superior luxury saloons like the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8L. We expect the CLS facelift to be launched here a few months after its European launch.
