Mercedes-Benz officially presented the AMG GT-R at the Goodwood Festival of Speed recently. This latest member from the brand's AMG GT family amazed all fans as it made its public debut for the first time.
The Mercedes-AMG GT-R is a new hardcore version of the GT, more of a track-oriented version. Featuring a mean green avatar, the supercar gets carbon fibre parts along with aerodynamic enhancements. Powering the GT-R is the same 4.0-litre twin turbo as the AMG GT S, but this one is tweaked for more power. 74bhp more than the current top-performing GT-S, bumping the total output to 577bhp. All this power is sent to the rear 20-inch lightweight aluminum wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch transaxle. A limited slip differential is nestled inside this transaxle.
The biggest highlight is the rear wheel steering, which is a first on a Mercedes. The conventional control arms on the rear axle are replaced by two electro-mechanical actuators. A "by-wire" system adjusts the tow angle of the rear wheels up to a maximum of 1.5-degrees. With this mechanism, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction as that of the front wheels up to a speed of 62mph. This virtually shortens the wheelbase, which is virtually lengthened above 62mph.
All the while, the Mercedes-AMG GT-R was seen in a camouflaged body lapping the Nurburgring track or undergoing winter testing. Finally, the carmaker has brought out the green monster in an ‘AMG green hell magno’ matte paint. It becomes the new range-topping model from Mercedes' line-up and will be launched in March 2017.
