Maruti Suzuki to launch two new diesel cars by the end of 2014

Maruti Suzuki is expected to launch two new diesel engined vehicles for the Indian market by the end of next year. The engines for these new cars will have a displacement of 1.0-litre and 1.4-litres and are being developed by parent company in Japan.  

While it is almost certain that the 1.0-litre engine will power the Wagon diesel, the 1.4-litre (turbocharged) mill is expected to power the next generation SX4 diesel, Ritz diesel as well as the Swift and Dzire diesel in various capacities.

Maruti Suzuki currently uses the 1.3-litre Fiat Multijet turbocharged diesel mill to power the Swift, Dzire, Ritz and SX4 oil burners. They had signed a deal with the Italian automaker to receive a supply one-lakh mills beginning from 2012.

Since diesel engined vehicles make up a majority of MSIl’s current sales, it is likely that the company does not want to depend on an external source in the long run for the engines. With Fiat implementing large scale expansion plans for its Indian operations, the need for a company like MSIL to have its own engine supply has become all the more important. These new engines as well as Maruti’s upcoming engine plant in Gujarat seems to be their step in long term sustainability.
