Labour problems continue to haunt Maruti

Labour problems continue to haunt Maruti

Just three months after Maruti Suzuki saw unprecedented riots at its Manesar plant, resulting in the death of one and injury to over 96, labour problems are back to haunt it again. Members of the Manesar plant workers’ union are staging a two-day hunger strike demanding a proper inquiry into the incident and reinstatement of all sacked workers. They have also demanded the release of all those arrested in connection with the July 18 riots.

Now, the workers’ union at the Gurgaon plant has given its backing for the two-day hunger strike being held by the employees who were sacked after the riots. Representatives of the Maruti Udyog Kamgar Union from the Gurgaon plant have said that they will lend support to the strike and be present whenever the protesting workers make a representation to the government.

However, they added that they will not participate in the hunger strike. The workers will protest at plant today and in front of the district Court on Thursday. Maruti Suzuki has however, taken a strong stand and said that it will not reinstate any of the sacked workers.
